Statutory Earnings May Not Be The Best Way To Understand WCT Holdings Berhad's (KLSE:WCT) True Position
Strong earnings weren't enough to please WCT Holdings Berhad's( KLSE:WCT ) shareholders over the last week. We did some digging and found some underlying numbers that are worrying.
How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?
For anyone who wants to understand WCT Holdings Berhad's profit beyond the statutory numbers, it's important to note that during the last twelve months statutory profit gained from RM235m worth of unusual items. While we like to see profit increases, we tend to be a little more cautious when unusual items have made a big contribution. When we crunched the numbers on thousands of publicly listed companies, we found that a boost from unusual items in a given year is often notrepeated the next year. And that's as you'd expect, given these boosts are described as 'unusual'. WCT Holdings Berhad had a rather significant contribution from unusual items relative to its profit to September 2025. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items are making its statutory profit significantly stronger than it would otherwise be.

An Unusual Tax Situation
Having already discussed the impact of the unusual items, we should also note that WCT Holdings Berhad received a tax benefit of RM45m. This is of course a bit out of the ordinary, given it is more common for companies to be paying tax than receiving tax benefits! We're sure the company was pleased with its tax benefit. And since it previously lost money, it may well simply indicate the realisation of past tax losses. However, our data indicates that tax benefits can temporarily boost statutory profit in the year it is booked, but subsequently profit may fall back. Assuming the tax benefit is not repeated every year, we could see its profitability drop noticeably, all else being equal. While we think it's good that the company has booked a tax benefit, it does mean that there's every chance the statutory profit will come in a lot higher than it would be if the income was adjusted for one-off factors.
Our Take On WCT Holdings Berhad's Profit Performance
In its last report WCT Holdings Berhad received a tax benefit which might make its profit look better than it really is on a underlying level. Furthermore, it also benefitted from a positive unusual item, which boosted the profit result even higher. For the reasons mentioned above, we think that a perfunctory glance at WCT Holdings Berhad's statutory profits might make it look better than it really is on an underlying level. With this in mind, we wouldn't consider investing in a stock unless we had a thorough understanding of the risks.
