Record revenue momentum is beating back a steep fuel bill at United Airlines Holdings( NASDAQ:UAL ), and United Airlines shares are pulling far ahead of the carrier's biggest rivals. United Airlines stock has climbed 6%, hitting $103.88 in afternoon trading, a jump that shows the market prizes the revenue outlook despite lower quarterly profits. Buyers are looking past the fuel hit and focusing on a revenue trend that keeps rising.

Record Q4 Revenue Forecast Outweighs the Fuel Squeeze
United Airlines posted record operating revenue of $17.9 billion in its Q3 2026 report, released ahead of this session, and said it expects Q4 2026 top-line growth to exceed 20% year over year as demand and customer spending stay strong. A sharply higher fuel bill weighed on the quarter, though adjusted earnings per share at United Airlines landed within the company's guidance. CEO Scott Kirby stated, "Our employees met the challenge of our ever-changing environment and our results prove the resilience of focusing on building a brand-loyal airline for customers."
On the balance sheet, United Airlines expanded its revolving credit facility as it works toward an investment-grade credit rating. Management stated that the airline is "highly confident" in recovering the full rise in fuel costs, albeit with a lag. That lag is the heart of the squeeze, since fares have only partly caught up with jet fuel so far.
Why United Airlines Is Outflying American Airlines and Delta
United Airlines leans on premium cabins, loyalty revenue and long-haul international routes, and that mix is carrying the top line right now. Each of the carrier's premium, loyalty, cargo and contracted business revenue streams grew at a double-digit pace in the quarter, a breadth that points to durable demand. Kirby is upbeat on pricing, saying, "I think there's a good chance that the industry surprises to the upside on yield next year, even in a higher capacity environment."
Product upgrades give United Airlines another edge, with Starlink Wi-Fi emerging as a selling point across its fleet. Kirby delivered his remarks through the earnings release. He declared, "We are winning new long-term, brand-loyal United customers because they are trying us for Starlink but staying with us for the industry-leading app, great service, on-board product and technology." That retention strategy hands United Airlines a story beyond fares, though it also demands heavy spending on aircraft and cabins.
American Airlines and Delta compete for the same corporate and premium travelers with their own networks, so the demand lifting United Airlines draws on a pool its rivals share, and gains in American Airlines and Delta shares remain modest beside the jump in United Airlines stock, a sign the market views the guidance as largely specific to one carrier. However, American Airlines and Delta shares are still participating in the sector advance, which keeps the rally broader than a single-stock event.
Fuel Prices Hold the Key to United Airlines' Margins
United Airlines still needs fuel prices to ease enough for record revenue to turn into wider margins. Management expects unit cost growth excluding fuel to step down from its third-quarter peak, and the carrier is preparing for elevated energy prices through next year.
Strong demand gives United Airlines stock a solid ground, yet jet fuel remains a cost the company can't control. UAL stock position sizes should stay modest until the fuel cost outlook resolves.
