Walmart makes revolutionary change to how you shop, launches Open AI partnership

Walmart has announced a new partnership with OpenAI that will soon allow customers to shop using ChatGPT — marking a revolutionary step into AI-driven retail.

The collaboration will allow shoppers to use conversational AI for tasks such as meal planning or restocking essentials, with purchases completed through Walmart's Instant Checkout.

The move is a shift away from traditional e-commerce, which relies on search bars and lists of results.

Doug McMillon, president and CEO of Walmart Inc., said the future of online shopping is a "native AI experience ... that is multi-media, personalized and contextual."

He added the company is "running toward that more enjoyable and convenient future."

This new approach, which Walmart calls "agentic commerce," aims to create a proactive system where AI learns customer habits to predict and plan for their needs.

Walmart and Sam's Club already use AI throughout their operations.

The company said its use has reduced fashion production timelines by as much as 18 weeks and cut customer care resolution times by up to 40%.

In addition to customer-facing tools, Walmart is integrating AI into its workforce.

The company is promoting AI literacy among its employees, rolling out ChatGPT Enterprise for internal teams, and partnering early in OpenAI's certification program.

Earlier this month, the company announced it is investing $1 billion in skills and technology training for its employees with the help of OpenAI , the company behind ChatGPT .

"Beginning next year, U.S. frontline and office-based associates will have access to cutting-edge AI training through a new collaboration with OpenAI," Walmart Chief People Officer Donna Morris said in a statement .

"They're launching a new OpenAI Certifications program, and we're working with them to create a customized experience for you," Morris said.
