Some of the world's richest people are decidedly less rich today.
The 500 wealthiest individuals on the planet just saw a total of $108 billion go down the drain yesterday thanks to a tech-sector sell-off triggered by Chinese AI developer DeepSeek, which sent the market into a tizzy, Bloomberg reported . Those with investments in AI-related tech saw the biggest decline, as $95 billion in wealth went up in smoke. That comes out to roughly 85 percent of the Bloomberg Billionaires Index's total decline.

Nvidia Corp. CEO Jensen Huang took one of the biggest hits, with his net worth plummeting $20.1 billion in a 20 percent drop, the publication reported. Larry Ellison , Oracle's cofounder, lost out on $22.6 billion, which reflects just 12 percent of his wealth. As for Michael Dell, of Dell Inc., and Changpeng "CZ" Zhao, of Binance Holdings Ltd., each titan lost $13 billion and $12.1 billion, respectfully.
For the unversed, DeepSeek has been creating artificial intelligence models for the past two years. The Hangzhou-based brand recently shot onto the Western scene over the past weekend, though, when its free R1 chatbot app skyrocketed to the top of app stores worldwide. DeepSeek had such a frenzy of new users that it suffered outages; it also had to limit signups to those with Chinese phone numbers, Bloomberg reported.
DeepSeek's surge to the top of the AI market took the tech industry by surprise. The sector has been pushing the idea that to develop the top AI models, a large amount of capital spending is required, according to Bloomberg. DeepSeek, meanwhile, reported that training its model required less than $6 million worth of computing power from Nvidia H800 chips. In comparison, Mark Zukerberg's Meta is looking to spend up to $65 billion on AI ventures this year alone, the CEO said this past Friday.
As for the Facebook creator, Zuckerberg has made a pretty penny with the help of his AI investment. He saw his fortune balloon a whopping 385 percent to $299 billion since the start of 2023 through this Friday, Bloomberg reported. Jeff Bezos , meanwhile, saw a 133 percent increase to $254 million over the same time frame. This soaring growth is due to the record-high valuations of U.S. tech stocks, which has helped the billionaires accumulate massive amounts of wealth, the publication noted. Neither Bezos nor Zuckerberg saw their fortunes decline due to the DeepSeek shake-up.
With wearable AI tech, AI-powered catamarans , and Delta's new AI-powered concierge service coming onto the scene, one thing seems certain: We're in for more movement and disruption on the artificial-intelligence market.
