  • AutoZone, Inc. is the largest retailer of aftermarket automotive parts and accessories in the United States. Founded on July 4, 1979 as Auto Shack, the company currently has 7,856 stores across the United States, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Brazil, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The company is based in Memphis, Tennessee. Originally a division of Memphis-based wholesale grocer Malone & Hyde, AutoZone was previously known as Auto Shack. After the sale of the grocery operation to the Fleming Companies of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the name of the company was changed to AutoZone just prior to the company going public. The company offers national brand and private-label products. According to management, more than 50% of the sales mix is private label. The margins on these private-label products are significantly higher than on branded products because AZO benefits from direct sourcing. The firm has approximately 130,000 employees (78,000 full-time and 52,000 part-time) and the shares are a component of the S&P 500.

  • Wednesday was another difficult day for stock investors. The tech heavy Nasdaq and Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) have rapidly rolled over into pullback territory (-5%, -10%), while the S&P 500 is very close, with a six-day loss of 4.5%. For the most past, intraday rallies continue to be used for raising cash -- and that's not a good look for the stock market. On the flipside, the S&P Small Cap 600 has barely budged from its June 4 all-time closing high, while the S&P MidCap 400 has given up only a bit over 2% from its all-time high.
