Investing.com -- Technology stocks attracted significant hedge fund buying last week, marking the fastest pace of purchases in nearly three months, Goldman Sachs Prime Brokerage reported.

Hedge funds purchased technology stocks across most major regions except Europe, with North America and Asia emerging markets leading the buying in dollar terms. The purchases included both closing short positions and establishing new long positions that anticipate price gains.

Semiconductor and chip manufacturers drew the most interest from speculators, along with software companies. Hedge funds sold communications equipment and IT services providers during the same period.

Companies positioned to benefit from artificial intelligence developments have maintained momentum despite broader economic pressures from the Iran war, according to the Goldman Sachs note.

Hedge fund portfolios now hold their largest technology positions relative to the MSCI world index in over five years. Bets on global information technology stocks reached record highs, surpassing all previous levels since Goldman Sachs Prime Brokerage began tracking these trades in 2016.
