Nasdaq completed its acquisition of Dasseti on September 2, adding an AI-assisted due-diligence and monitoring platform to Nasdaq eVestment. Dasseti covers more than 17,000 managers and general partners with about $34 trillion of assets under management, while eVestment serves 4,800 asset managers and 1,200 allocators and intermediaries representing more than $90 trillion. Nasdaq, Inc. (NASDAQ: NDAQ ) is buying workflow. Intercontinental Exchange, Inc. (NYSE: ICE ) is building structured private-credit data with Apollo as an anchor partner.

Nasdaq's bull case is network depth. Combining manager databases, questionnaires, monitoring, and analytics can make switching costly for asset owners and consultants. AI can reduce manual diligence work while each completed workflow improves the dataset. Insider Monkey counted 57 hedge funds holding NDAQ at June 30, up from 56 at March 31. Harris Associates reported 8,092,686 shares.

The risk is integration and monetization. Nasdaq did not disclose financial terms, so investors cannot calculate the acquisition multiple or near-term earnings contribution. AI-assisted diligence must also maintain accuracy, permissions, and auditability. Large asset figures describe institutions represented in datasets, not revenue controlled by Nasdaq.

ICE approaches the market from security-level intelligence. Its Private Credit Intelligence product uses AI plus human analysts to extract deal terms for a private-credit market Apollo estimates at $40 trillion. Apollo's role can improve relevance and early adoption. Eighty-nine hedge funds held Intercontinental Exchange, Inc. (NYSE:ICE) in Q2, up from 86 in Q1. Harris Associates' 18,050,700-share disclosure increased 11%.

ICE's downside is opacity. Private-credit documents are inconsistent, lender access is fragmented, and extracted data can be difficult to verify. The $40 trillion estimate is the company's framing, not proof of addressable revenue. Apollo as anchor customer also does not guarantee broad market adoption.

Nasdaq's August 14 short interest stood at 9.25 million shares, about 1.66% of float, with 3.45 days to cover. The reading predates the Dasseti closing and indicates limited bearish crowding. Nasdaq may own the broader institutional workflow, while ICE may create the more differentiated asset-level dataset. Renewal rates, cross-selling, disclosed revenue contribution, and the number of third-party adopters will reveal which moat compounds.

Data rights are another dividing line. A platform is valuable only if customers can lawfully contribute, normalize, and reuse sensitive documents. Strong permissioning could deepen either moat; weak provenance could create compliance costs and reduce trust. Investors should therefore watch product disclosures about source coverage and audit trails alongside conventional revenue metrics.

While we acknowledge the potential of NDAQ as an investment, we believe certain other AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk.
