Nvidia ( NVDA ) is exploring a way to expand AI computing capacity through existing property, approaching Apollo Global Management ( APO ) about converting Brightspeed telecom buildings into smaller data centers.
The proposal could cover more than 130 locations across as many as 20 U.S. states. The properties were built to handle telephone and internet traffic, but Nvidia is considering whether they could be adapted to host infrastructure for artificial intelligence workloads.
Apollo-backed Brightspeed owns the buildings and is reportedly facing severe financial pressure. Reusing the sites could offer a new purpose for a dispersed portfolio of legacy network facilities while giving Nvidia access to existing locations instead of relying entirely on new construction.
Rather than creating a single large campus, the concept would distribute computing sites among existing properties. The reported discussions come as technology companies seek additional capacity for AI services. However, the approach remains exploratory: the report does not establish that a transaction has been agreed, how many buildings might be converted or when any work could begin.
