Allbirds now operates under a brand new name.
Business Insider reports that the San Francisco-based footwear and apparel brand — a favorite of those in Silicon Valley — has officially become "Smartbird" as the company shifts its focus to AI.
According to Retail Dive , Smartbird is an AI infrastructure provider following a 20 percent plummet in sales in 2025, amounting to a net loss of $77 million. The company announced it would close all full-price stores nationwide in January.
A Smartbird press release has additionally announced the coming of new president and CEO, Nadia Carlsten, along with this new business initiative. Carlsten previously served as the CEO of DCAI, an AI company that launched a sovereign AI supercomputer in partnership with tech titan, NVIDIA.
"We are thrilled to usher in this new era of the company with Nadia at the helm," said independent Smartbird director Lily Yan Hughes via the release. "Her groundbreaking work and visionary mindset will be instrumental in establishing a foothold in the market and building a scalable long-term solution."
Retail Dive notes that Smartbird is listed on the Nasdaq Global Select Market trading under the ticker "BIRD." Its stock surged by more than 50 percent following the announcement of its name change and the appointment of Carlsten, Yahoo! Finance reported .
"Smartbird is entering the market at a pivotal moment in the evolution of AI infrastructure," said Carlsten via the release. "AI is rapidly becoming mission-critical for organizations across every industry, yet many organizations lack a practical path to deploy and operate the dedicated infrastructure these workloads require."
