Australian small caps remained under pressure on Wednesday, with the S&P/ASX Small Ordinaries (XSO) falling 27.10 points, or 0.86%, to 3,124.70.
The index has now lost 52.50 points, or 1.65%, over the past five sessions as investors navigate a more challenging interest rate backdrop and broader volatility across equity markets.
Against that weaker market setting, individual small-cap stories continue to draw attention, with Cyprium Metals completing the first tranche of a sizeable capital raising, American West Metals delivering a maiden ore reserve and pre-feasibility study for its Storm Copper Project, and Weebit Nano launching a new research program targeting in-memory computing.
Cyprium completes first tranche of A$20.7 million placement
Cyprium Metals Ltd ( ASX:CYM , OTCQB:CYPMF ) has completed the first tranche of its two-tranche placement to raise approximately A$20.7 million before costs.
The emerging copper producer is issuing around 62.8 million new fully paid ordinary shares at A$0.33 per share under the placement.
Cyprium's principal asset is the Nifty Copper Complex in Western Australia's Paterson region, where the company is working toward establishing a new source of copper production.
The completion of tranche one strengthens the company's funding position as it continues to advance Nifty and its broader development strategy.
American West outlines low-capital path to Storm copper production
American West Metals Ltd ( ASX:AW1 , OTCQB:AWMLF ) has delivered a pre-feasibility study and maiden ore reserve for the Storm Copper Project on Somerset Island in Nunavut, Canada, outlining what the company describes as a relatively low-capital development opportunity.
The maiden ore reserve stands at 12.58 million tonnes grading 1.2% copper and 3.7 grams per tonne silver, containing around 151,000 tonnes of copper and 1.5 million ounces of silver.
The study envisages an initial 11-year mine life producing about 10,000 tonnes of copper annually on average, with production potentially reaching 14,000 tonnes a year.
At a base-case copper price of US$5.30 per pound, Storm is estimated to generate a post-tax net present value of US$119 million, a post-tax internal rate of return of 32.8% and US$179 million in post-tax free cash flow.
Life-of-mine revenue is estimated at US$1.2 billion at a spot copper price of US$6.53 per pound, the post-tax NPV rises to US$233 million and the IRR to 55.1%.
Weebit Nano launches in-memory computing research program
Weebit Nano Ltd ( ASX:WBT , OTC:WBTNF , FRA:6RI ) has launched the Weebit Matrix™ In-Memory Compute Research Program to support the development of next-generation computing architectures using its resistive random-access memory technology.
The program will provide industry and academic researchers with a ReRAM-based hardware development kit to explore and prototype in-memory computing algorithms and systems.
In-memory computing is designed to address one of the major constraints in modern artificial intelligence workloads: the need to constantly transfer data between processors and memory.
By carrying out calculations directly within memory, the approach has the potential to reduce data movement, improve processing speeds and lower power consumption.
Weebit said the technology could be particularly relevant for AI inference applications in edge computing and Internet of Things devices.
Researchers participating in the program will be able to test AI algorithms, explore new programming approaches and investigate neuromorphic and other advanced computing architectures using the company's ReRAM platform.
They will also share findings and feedback with Weebit, helping the company refine its technology while supporting broader research into new memory-based computing models.
