Investing.com --China opened its five-day World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing on Saturday, turning the competition into a showcase for commercial technology and a robotics industry viewed as strategically important by the government, Reuters reported.
The event, sometimes called the "Robot Olympics," features machines competing in athletic events and practical tasks. This year, robots will be judged on the speed and accuracy of their hands while tightening screws, opening bottles and picking up beads with tweezers.
The tasks address one of the sector's hardest engineering challenges: creating robotic hands capable of matching human precision and touch. They also reflect growing pressure on manufacturers to prove that humanoid prototypes can perform useful work outside controlled demonstrations.
China's robot competitions began as relatively small events involving university teams and hobbyists. Early machines included wheeled robots playing simplified football using limited pre-programmed automation.
The industry gained national prominence after President Xi Jinping described robotics as the "crown jewel" of advanced manufacturing in 2014. Beijing hosted its first World Robot Conference the following year, establishing the sector as a government priority.
By 2023, the conference had become a major platform for commercial products. Xiaomi Corp.'s Cyberdog drew attention with a launch price of about $1,500, compared with more than $75,000 for Boston Dynamics' Spot robot.
Humanoid performance has advanced rapidly since Beijing's first robot half-marathon in April 2025, when many machines collapsed, hit barriers or failed to finish.
At the 2026 race, 47 of more than 100 teams completed the course, according to state media. A Unitree H1 crossed the finishing straight without an accompanying engineer, while Honor's autonomous Flash humanoid finished in 50 minutes and 26 seconds.
Analysts and executives attributed the gains to China's growing robotics supply chain, falling component costs and government support. A 2021 state plan offered subsidies, research tax breaks and financing to support domestic innovation.
The commercial test is whether manufacturers can turn improvements in mobility and dexterity into reliable machines for factories, warehouses and other workplaces.
