  • Elon Musk says SpaceX could buy a legacy carrier and use its airwaves "ten times more effectively," though he named no target and nothing has been filed.

  • Deutsche Telekom CEO Tim Hoettges says SpaceX would need at least $220 billion to rival US carriers, with 76 MHz of spectrum against T-Mobile's 400.

  • Any carrier purchase would saddle SpaceX with Verizon's $166 billion or AT&T's $160 billion of debt, plus approvals from antitrust regulators and the FCC.

Elon Musk told investors on November 6, 2026, that SpaceX( NASDAQ:SPCX ) could buy a legacy telecom carrier and use its airwaves "ten times more effectively." He made the comment by video with Ron Baron at the annual Baron Investment Conference in New York.

A series of large, white satellite dishes are angled upwards against a bright blue sky with scattered clouds. A prominent sun flare is visible in the upper left corner, illuminating the scene. The dishes are constructed from white and gray metal, with intricate support structures visible beneath their parabolic surfaces, conveying a sense of advanced technology and communication infrastructure.

Musk also said SpaceX could go far with the spectrum it already has, and he named no target. He made any purchase conditional on SpaceX using spectrum better than the incumbent does.

T-Mobile( NASDAQ:TMUS ) rose 0.88%. Verizon( NYSE:VZ ) and AT&T( NYSE:T ) each slipped 0.89%. SpaceX rose 8.62% to $134.27, but Musk also gave his revenue outlook in the same conversation, and the stock had lost 19.89% over the prior month during a post-election Nasdaq rout.

What SpaceX Already Owns in the Airwaves

Spectrum means licensed radio frequencies. A phone can connect to a satellite or a tower only on airwaves the operator has the legal right to use, so those licenses determine whether direct-to-phone service can work at scale.

SpaceX bought AWS-4 and H-block licenses from EchoStar on September 8, 2025, for roughly $17 billion. It paid $8.5 billion in cash and $8.5 billion in SpaceX stock. It has also agreed to buy nationwide 800 MHz licenses, with closing expected in the first half of 2027. There are also reports of talks over Boost Mobile, but nothing has been confirmed.

Why Deutsche Telekom Puts the Entry Price Near $220 Billion

On Deutsche Telekom's November 5 earnings call, CEO Tim Hoettges said SpaceX would need at least EUR 200 billion, or about $220 billion, to compete with the established US carriers. His company controls T-Mobile, so he has a reason to make entry look expensive.

He put SpaceX's spectrum at 76 MHz, compared with roughly 400 MHz for T-Mobile. He said leasing tower space alone would cost $20 billion to $30 billion, but he still said his company has to assume SpaceX will enter the market.

Debt and Regulators Come With Any Carrier

At the close, the three carriers were worth about $507 billion combined. SpaceX was worth roughly $1.77 trillion, so a deal paid partly in stock is possible on paper.

A buyer would also take on debt, including Verizon's $166.2 billion or AT&T's $159.6 billion, along with labor unions, retail stores and landline networks. Antitrust regulators and the FCC would both have to approve it.

How Each Stock Took the Remark

T-Mobile is down 18.46% year to date, and its third-quarter report pointed to worry over SpaceX's fourth-carrier ambitions. Verizon closed at $45.71 and AT&T at $21.63. No one linked their small moves to Musk.

Viasat( NASDAQ:VSAT ) rose 7.7% to $63.95 after its results. Its CFO said Viasat ended the quarter with 100,000 US fixed broadband subscribers paying $111 a month on average, and fixed services revenue fell 23%.

Investor Sawyer Merritt noted that Viasat had 603,000 subscribers in September 2020, the year Starlink opened to the public. That is a drop of 83%, which shows Starlink is already pulling customers from older satellite providers.

What SpaceX Investors Need to Weigh Before the 800 MHz Closing

At $134.27, SpaceX's price likely already assumes Starlink Mobile succeeds. Turning Musk's comment into a carrier business would bring debt, regulators, and a bill that Hoettges puts at $220 billion or more.

T-Mobile's recent results give a useful point of comparison. It raised its 2026 Core Adjusted EBITDA guidance to $37.35 billion to $37.45 billion and raised its dividend 15% to $1.17 a share, and its stock price already reflects the fear of SpaceX.

Keep an eye on the 800 MHz closing in the first half of 2027. If no SpaceX filing with the FCC or SEC names a US carrier by then, the comment is still just a hypothetical, and T-Mobile's discount should narrow.
