American Superconductor ( AMSC ) President, Chairman, and CEO Daniel McGahn joins Market Catalyst host Brooke DiPalma to discuss comments from AI CEOs calling for more regulation, how that could affect the semiconductor industry, and why energy expansion is key to maintaining demand.

How exactly are we going to supply this demand that we have right now? So walk us through, what is that demand right now?

00:09 Speaker B

So we see it's surging. So the challenge is there's so much required of the electrical grid to be able to support the power demands for today and for the future. We have a tremendous amount of expansion of manufacturing that's going on in this country, and the electric grid that really isn't robust enough to be able to fully satisfy that. So where AMSC comes in is we try to be that bridge to the grid to build a more resilient, robust system to be able to power the the the factories for the future.

What do you make of the recent commentary from AI leaders from Open AI, Sam Altman, from Anthropic, Dario Made, and many others, even Elon Musk on a smaller scale. They say that they want to slow down, that they want regulation. So, what would that mean for an industry like yours that was ramping up so quickly, but yet maybe now we might see a small pullback.

01:21 Speaker B

I don't think we'll really see that when it comes to AMSC. So our business is pretty diversified. Uh about 20, 30% is really driven by traditional energy and the need for everything from uh gas pipelines to traditional power. That's all going to be front and center and necessary and needed. Data centers as a part of our business has been a very, very small fraction. A lot of people have chided me and like, why aren't we more involved in data centers? We're trying to build a very robust, uh resilient business as well as a resilient grid, which is really what we're after. and we're doing that through diversity of what we what we deliver to our customers.

So what do you think then is the biggest risk or challenge ahead for you guys?

02:11 Speaker B

I think the biggest challenge in general is the investment in the capital to warrant the capacity to bring online, be it mining or processing of materials, uh the semiconductor is a big part of what we're doing, pipelines and and power. That seems to be a persistent trend. When we look at the major markets that drive us, they're all trillion dollar investment this year and they're all really dependent upon power and electricity. And that's where AMSC comes in.
