Aptera Motors ( SEV ) co-founder and CEO Chris Anthony comes on Asking for a Trend to discuss the features of the company's three-wheeled car, which can cover up to 40 miles of daily driving on the sun's charge alone.
Well, Aptera is betting the future of EVs could look very different. Lighter, more efficient, and powered in part by the sun.
Aptera is making the most efficient transportation possible. So, aerodynamics first, what people don't realize is that passenger cars and SUVs on the road today burn up to 70% of their fuel at highway speeds, just pushing air out of the way. So, our vehicle looks more like a fish than a box, then it's lightweight, and an efficient power train, and that gets you something that gets about 350 miles per gallon equivalent. Add solar power to the equation and you get 40 miles a day of free power from the sunshine.
It's in an EV configuration that gets you 400 miles of range with the standard battery pack. So we think it's uh it's going to add a lot of value to people's lives as we get these on the road.
Others have tried to do this, Chris, right? Build solar-powered cars. What are you do doing different? What's your technological edge here?
Uh really, it's our focus on efficiency. If you add our solar package to most other EVs out there, uh it may only get you 10, 12 miles a day of solar range, but when you can get 40 miles a day of free power from the sun, and you're an average driver that only drives 30 miles a day, that's basically a perpetual motion machine. Just sit in your driveway, soaking up the rays, ready to drive whenever you want to drive.
And how many of these Chris, are you going to be able to to produce? And and when are they going to be available?
Uh, yeah, we just signed a great strategic investor in launch design out of Shanghai. They're helping us ramp into production, low in our bill material cost and should be a great gateway to us globally distributing these vehicles. Uh we hope to be in high volume production in 2027, building about 20,000 vehicles a year out of our US facility and possibly more internationally. Uh we have about 50,000 orders for our vehicles right now. We're just trying to deliver them as quickly as we can. Uh hopefully by the end of the year uh or close to handing somebody the first keys to the first production vehicles.
And what are you charging, Chris? How much does this this product cost?
Uh the 400 mile range version is about $40,000. Uh we'll have up to a 1000 mile range version and possibly a a less expensive version uh in the 200 mi range.
