Yahoo Finance Markets and Data Editor Jared Blikre breaks down the broad market sell-off led by semiconductors, with SOX ( ^SOX ) down 10% and Intel ( INTC ) down 30%, ending tech's worst day since June.
Stocks ending the day in a sea of red. Let's go to the YFi interactive. I'm going to show you that sea of red. It is in the semiconductors.
We got the SOX down 10%. We got Intel down 30%. Take a look at this chart right here. I almost never start on this note, but that is definitely Intel today. Here's a year to date. It is sliced through uh those low that we saw in the middle of the year and just trying to find a bottom there.
But we might have one in the Sox. We're going to talk to Jeff Hirsch about that in a second. First, I want to go over the days and weeks price action in the majors. So let's take a look at the Dow. You're just taking a look at the five-year uh 10-year, but here's the Dow down 1.27% today.
Over the week, you can see it was mostly green until we got uh late Thursday. Now it's down 1% for these five days. NASDAQ down 2%, S&P 500 for the week down 8/10th of a percent. So not looking terrible on a weekly basis.
Russell 2000 still in the green and uh let's go back and take a look at some of the sector action. We're going to take you off that red screen right there, but so it's kind of split. You got energy up top up 2%.
We were just talking with Rob Thummel about the energy trade, which is up over 50% this year, large cap-wise. Then we got staples, utilities, healthcare, that is your defensive trade asserting. arguably energy is too. materials and real estate round out the top row, but to the bottom row, we got tech. That is the only one doing worse than the S&P 500. It is down 5%. The majors and tech I think are having their worst day since at least June.
