Quantum Blockchain Technologies CEO discusses latest Bitcoin mining method milestones

Quantum Blockchain Technologies PLC (AIM:QBT, FRA:BYA1) CEO Francesco Gardin spoke with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about progress with its Bitcoin mining methods, compatibility with Bitmain S19 and S21 rigs, and a software interface designed to connect its technology with different mining hardware.

Gardin explained how testing on the Bitmain S9 helped the company develop specifications for aftermarket control boards, allowing its optimisation methods to be integrated without sharing the underlying technology. He said the system can be operated remotely, with the company's servers processing data from mining rigs and sending instructions back approximately every ten minutes.

The interview also explored a new software layer supporting Methods A, B and C, each with different operational requirements. Quantum Blockchain is now testing Methods A and B on a manufacturer's mining machine to assess their performance on that hardware.

Gardin stressed that the company's limited Bitcoin mining activity is primarily for laboratory testing and research, rather than generating commercial mining revenue.

We don't have to share any of our technology. We keep it running on our server. They don't have to share uh their source code of their implementation of the control of the software on their aftermarket control boards.

Hello, you're watching Proactive. I'm joined by Francesco Gardin, the CEO of Quantum Blockchain Technologies. Francesco, good to speak with you. You're reported that Method A is now configurable for the Bitmain S19 and S21 mining rigs. What's the significance of this development?

00:46 Francesco Gardin

Okay, good morning, Stephen. Thank you for having me with you again. Um, when we decided to uh use a target machine like the S9, the meaning, the reason, the main reason for that is that clients wouldn't be or prospects wouldn't be happy to see our technology running on a single chips, which were the only ones for which we had an operating system open source. And then we focused our attention since I would say

01:29 Francesco Gardin

summer of last year on uh getting a hold of the S9 machines, which we already had in storage, but uh we brought them at the university and then uh deciding whether we would use the last open source version of Bitmain for the S9 or the uh Brains um BOS miner uh Brains operating system miner. We opted for Brains operating system miner, uh which is written in Rust, which is a a complex language, but extremely efficient. And so we dedicated one person to make the changes that we needed, uh which were substantial.

02:22 Francesco Gardin

Uh and then uh we uh started to test the uh method A on this machine. Uh but in doing so, we basically worked out that we can write specs uh of the changes and the data that we need from the operating system and we can just handle the specs to one of the few companies that we uh are in this sector of the uh aftermarket control boards. They would implement them and then they would be in business. So, we uh the it was crucial to have this running on the S9 because it's a similar structure although different chips from the S19 and 21, but the concept is I give you the specs, you implement the specs, which is an easy job of like a week or a couple of weeks for who has developed this alternative operating systems for these aftermarket control boards. And then we have all the data which we need to train our method A and we have a simple way to send the instruction uh every 10 minutes one one instruction uh to the miner and that's it. And the beauty of this is that we don't have to share any of our technology.

04:06 Francesco Gardin

We keep it running on our server. They don't have to share uh their source code of their implementation of the control of the software on their aftermarket control board. So, uh which was one of the problem in the past. We didn't want to show uh our technology, they didn't want to share their uh their source code. In this way, we have our system running on a server, getting information from this machine, sending data, and we can show them how this works on the S9.

04:46 Stephen

What's the importance of the new software layer that that allow the implementation of all three mining methods to perform on the ASIC manufacturer's mining rig?

04:59 Francesco Gardin

Yeah. Uh, okay. The main goal was the implementation of the uh method C on the uh manufacturing mining rig uh and then uh by understanding deeply this operating system and this ASIC, which are they have the peculiarities of every ASIC. They every ASIC is different from any other because each manufacturer thinks that his design can make it more efficient.

05:43 Francesco Gardin

Then we realized that why we don't generalize this approach. So, now we have built this layer which is internally inside the the operating system where we can give instructions which what the instruction of method ABC would need to give to the miner and get the information uh as a feedback that we need from the miner. Uh and we uh did this because we think that uh each method has its own peculiarities. Method C requires uh an infrastructure to to uh to operate. Uh um Method A has a smaller infrastructure, Method C, no infrastructure. So you you just load it. It's a self- training system uh based on chaos mathematics. You load it on the machine and you don't need uh apart from monitoring uh uh uh you don't need to uh talk to our server. And which is what the ASIC manufacturer uh uh company uh likes because the less infrastructure you force the uh the customer, the final customer, the the miner to use, the better it is.

07:33 Francesco Gardin

And so, we are now at a point where after this, we are testing uh method A and B on the using manufacturing machine. Uh but testing is not if it works. Testing is uh how it works with that machine.

07:54 Stephen

Francesco, you state that Method A is now running remotely and connected to mining rigs via an interface. What does this mean for QBT's commercial prospects?

08:08 Francesco Gardin

That as as I uh pointed out before that we have our server, our server get the data from uh the miner. Uh we uh train uh and we have also a reference miner which generate other data, but this is a side. And basically, we send from our server where the learning core is based, we send instruction every 10 minutes, just a simple set of instruction which are uh, I mean, uh from the point of view of the bandwidth like close to zero as occupancy of the band and we operate. So, we keep our technology, we don't have to share, but we control the machine remotely by sending one message every 10 minutes, which is fully sustainable uh within the bandwidth of what is already in the natural interaction between the miner and the pool.

09:34 Stephen

Finally, you say you are Bitcoin mining. Does this mean you're generating revenue or is it mostly for R&D data collection?

09:44 Francesco Gardin

Yeah, I mean, uh, we we are uh, mining but for the purpose of uh uh our lab mining. Uh so we, yes, we have collected uh uh over the years a number of uh Satoshis. Uh, we don't need to sell them. Uh, even if we sell, it will be, I mean, a few tens of thousands, so that's not uh the the the goal. Uh, and so yes, we are mining as if we were a miner, just we are mining with a limited number of of devices, uh but uh we're not a miner. I mean, technically we are mining, but we're doing it for the purpose of our lab uh tests.

10:52 Stephen

Francesco, I hope you'll continue to keep us updated with your progress. Thank you very much for your time today.

10:58 Francesco Gardin

Okay, thank you from Milan. Thank you very much, Stephen.
