How this robotics company is helping HII to build US Navy ships: CEO explains

GrayMatter Robotics CEO and co-founder Ariyan Kabir discusses the company's deal with Huntington Ingalls Industries ( HII ) for delivering US Navy-grade ship production.

It actually sounds like a big deal with HII help build Navy ships. What exactly were your were your uh robots be doing Aryan, spell it out for us.

As you mean in shipbuilding, there's a massive shortage of skilled labor as we speak today in the US. We we have severe capacity constraint.

And if you look at shipbuilding, you get raw materials, raw metal, right? Raw sheets of metal, and then you take them through a range of operations until you get a full ship.

You start by doing cutting, welding, grinding, blasting, coating, a lot of inspection in between different stages, a lot of assembly, then there are a lot of other fitting and uh, you know, different kind of applications. And then finally, you get a full ship.

And all of these operations today are heavily dependent on human labor, manual labor, skilled workers.

And the reason for that is these operations have high variability part-to-part or instance to instance. So we can't really use robots like automotive industry.

And on the other hand, these are extremely tedious, extremely ergonomically challenging on human body and people who are doing these jobs for 3, 5, 8 years, get carpal tunnel, shoulder injury, back injury, respiratory problems and what not.

So, this partnership with HII, you know, for GreyMatter robotics and Path Robotics, we are creating a completely new next generation shipyard ground up so that we can have raw materials in, parts out, full end-to-end autonomy.

And not just that, we are building this in a way so that this shipyard becomes rapidly reconfigurable and rapidly deployable so that as you are working with new, you know, designs or materials, these solutions, physical AI part solutions can adapt very, very rapidly.

What are the metrics you're watching?

That's a great question. You look at two things. End of the day, it's pretty much like a constrained optimization problem.

You look at constraints, which are safety and quality, right? For each of these operations or application, there are specific navy standards that we have to meet. There are specific mill spec that we have to meet.

Whether it's grinding or blasting or coating, you name it, right?

So that gives you the qualitative measure in a very objective way that, okay, we are meeting the quality specification.

But after that, it's all about throughput and cost per unit. Can we produce a lot more from the same footprint

of a shipyard and then can we help reduce the cost per unit so that we get a lot more ship at a much faster pace without increasing our cost for building those ships.

So that's basically how we approach these problems. But end of the day, we also have to look at what's the optimal teaming of human robot and AI, right? Because not everything will be done by robots and AI, there will be still a lot of high-level decisions and, you know, vision that needs to be guided by human.

And that orchestration plays a big role.

So if you look at manufacturing in across all these operations, or even if you think about bringing robotics, autonomy for robots is just one piece of the puzzle. There are a range of other operations.

You have to look at doing a lot of solution engineering, industrial engineering, process engineering, prognostics and health management, overall factory optimization.
