Shopify ( SHOP ) shares are tumbling following the company's latest earnings report. Sherwood News Head of Markets Luke Kawa joins The 8:30 hosts Jake Conley and Pras Subramanian to break down what's driving the sell-off.
The other thing we're moving today, Shopify coming out this morning. That stock getting crushed. It's down 19% in the pre-market. And I'll tell you why. Adjusted EPS was a beat. Revenue, pretty much in line, but the miss, gross merchandise volume falling to 119 point, or excuse me, coming in at 119.1 billion, but was expected at 120 billion, growth slowing to 29% from 31%. That's a tough business to not be seeing growth in your merchandising.
Yeah, hey, penalty box for anyone who doesn't accelerate. It seems like uh.
Penalty box for anyone who doesn't accelerate.
Like I I remember earlier this year, we were doing the whole like everyone was posting the chart of newspaper earnings versus newspaper stocks and how, you know, newspapers just as stocks were terrible investments and but the earnings were still fine for a while. Now everyone and they were doing that to compare them to software companies. Now everyone's doing that for semiconductor companies. This is how, this is how far we've come. But yeah, no, it's it's very much the what have you done for me lately in the accelerator die market.
Yeah. I mean is Shopify kind of under threat with agents and things like that? You know, is that is that part of the deal, maybe?
I I mean, I would say to the contrary, I would say they've been trying at least uh the the public face has been to, you know, adopt and incorporate as much as possible and embrace uh agentic shopping, but you know, that's again, I think not necessarily a a story that would have shown up meaningfully this quarter yet. I think kind of, you know, larger story zooming out, you know, isn't part of isn't the part of the fun of whether it's, you know, picking stocks or shopping, the fact that you're doing the clicking yourself? Isn't that a key part of the dopamine?
