Anime Thriller Perfect Blue Getting A Steelbook Edition 4K Blu-Ray In June

Anime covers many genres, and if you're in the mood for psychological suspense, check out this preorder for the cult-classic thriller Perfect Blue. A stylish new steelbook edition of Satoshi Kon's landmark film releases June 16, and you can preorder the 4K Blu-ray for $36 through Gruv. It's also available at Amazon , though the price is much higher at $50. We expect Amazon's price to drop to match Gruv's ahead of launch, and preordering at Amazon means you're entitled to any price drops and don't pay until your order ships.

The Perfect Blue Steelbook Edition 4K Blu-ray is a complete 4K restoration of the original film. It includes both the English dub and the original Japanese voice track with English subtitles. The 4K disc comes with a standard Blu-ray copy of the film. Special features include a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the "Angel of Your Heart" music video, cast and crew interviews, several trailers, and almost two hours of lectures by Kon discussing the film's themes.

Perfect Blue was Kon's directorial debut and was first released in 1997. Set in the cutthroat world of Japan's entertainment industry, the film follows pop idol Mima Kirigoe and her efforts to break into acting. Under pressure from work, obsessive fans, stalkers, and gruesome murders around her, Kirigoe finds herself caught in a nightmare as her reality begins to crack. Considered one of the best anime films of all time, Kon followed it with the influential Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfather, and Paprika, but his career was cut short by his death in 2010.
A Perfect Blue 4K Collector's Editio n was released in December 2025. Amazon still has it in stock for $66.84 (was $100). While it is pricier than the steelbook edition, it includes all the same bonus materials plus extras like a 128-page art book, 10 art cards, a poster, and a slipcase cover with alternate art.
