A tote bag is one of the hardest-working accessories I own. It carries everything from work essentials to groceries to travel must-haves, often all in the same week. Over years of testing products, though, I've found that not every tote is designed to handle real life. Some are too flimsy to hold their shape, others dig into your shoulder and plenty are so cavernous that finding your keys feels like a daily scavenger hunt.

To help separate the truly great options from the rest, I'm sharing my favorite picks along with coveted selections from nine shopping editors and stylists. I prioritized picks that balance durability, comfort and timeless style, along with thoughtful details that make everyday carrying easier. Whether you're looking for a polished work bag , a travel bag or a crossbody carryall, these are the totes you'll reach for again and again.
Material:Cotton canvas | Dimensions:15 x 17 x 7 in. | Colors:12 | Closure:Zipper | Pockets:None | Laptop compatibility:N/A
Why we love it:There's a reason the Boat and Tote has been an enduring favorite since 1944. Multiple editors called it their go-to for everything from errands and beach days to weekend trips and even the gym. The heavyweight canvas is exceptionally durable, the structured shape holds even when half empty and it's available in multiple sizes with your choice of short or long handles and an open or zip-top design. It's also one of the few bags editors own in multiples with different sizes serving different purposes.
What experts say:"The size, structure, durability and utility of this tote are unmatched," says Senior Style Editor Jessica Teich . "The XL size is the perfect catch-all if you're a grab-and-goer. It's massive and perfect for errands, a weekend away, a beach day or just as a catch-all for all your pet's or kid's odds and ends." Style Optimization Editor Hannah Oh adds, "the zip-top is a must."
Keep in mind:This is a minimalist tote by design, so don't expect built-in organization. There are no interior pockets or dedicated laptop sleeve, and the natural canvas can show dirt over time. That said, I regularly toss mine in the washing machine, and it's still going strong two years later.
- Durable construction
- Versatile size and customization options
- Relatively affordable for the longevity
- No interior organization
Material:Recycled nylon | Dimensions:25.5 × 15.5 × 6 in. | Colors:38 | Closure:None | Pockets:None | Laptop compatibility:N/A
Why we love it:Lightweight enough to stash in your purse or glove compartment, this hardworking yet budget-friendly tote folds into its own compact pouch but opens into a surprisingly roomy bag that can handle everything from groceries and library books to beach gear. Its machine-washable ripstop nylon construction is also impressively durable, so you can pack it full of stuff time and time again.
What experts say:"This may be the greatest reusable bag out there," says Oh, who's been using Baggu bags for weekly grocery hauls for over 6 years. "They are basically indestructible," says Oh. "I've lugged heavy cartons of oat milk, canned goods, bags of flour and sugar, a week's worth of protein shakes and tons of other heavy items in them, and after hundreds of uses I see nary a scratch, stray thread or at-risk-of-opening seam. They live at the bottom of my purse, weighing a couple ounces at most, so I always have them on hand."
Keep in mind:The Standard Baggu is designed as a simple reusable tote, so it doesn't have pockets, a zipper or any built-in organization. It's best suited for errands, groceries and casual outings rather than carrying a laptop or serving as a structured everyday bag.
- Holds up to 50 lbs.
- Durable, long-lasting construction
- Folds down into nothing
- No interior organization
Material:Recycled polyester | Dimensions:12.6 x 20.9 x 6.1 in. | Colors:10 | Closure:Zipper | Pockets:1 | Laptop compatibility:Up to 16"
Why we love it:Rothy's Lightweight Zip Tote is roomy enough to fit a 16-inch laptop without feeling burdensomely large, yet it's surprisingly lightweight, making it comfortable to carry even when packed with your daily essentials. The zip-top closure keeps everything secure and, unlike many totes, it's unique spill- and stain-resistant fabric is machine washable to keep it looking fresh.
What experts say:"This bag is really lightweight, and the size is perfect — big enough for a 16-inch laptop with some extra room without being bulky," says Senior Home Writer Kristin Granero , noting it's straps are comfy even when weighed down. "I have it in 'Night Song,' and I love the design (I get compliments on it all the time!). The coloring/stitching masks dirt, but this bag is also machine-washable for when it needs a refresh. I just lay it out to dry."
Keep in mind; While the tote has an interior pocket and a zippered main compartment, there's no dedicated laptop sleeve. If you prefer lots of built-in organization, you may want to pair this bag with a laptop sleeve or pouch.
- Machine-washable fabric
- Comfortable straps
- Roomy interior
- Minimal interior organization
Material:Nylon and vegan leather trim | Dimensions:14 x 6.5 x 12 in. | Colors:3 | Closure:Zipper and magnetic | Pockets:5 | Laptop compatibility:Up to 13"
Why we love it:It's hard to find a work tote that's both spacious and streamlined, but this one strikes that balance. Its structured silhouette keeps the bag from sagging whether it's half-full or packed with work essentials, while shoulder and crossbody straps offer multiple comfortable carrying options.
What experts say:"It looks chic, can hold everything I need for the work day, the straps are substantial, and the material feels high-quality enough to withstand daily wear and tear," says Oh. Inside, five pockets keep everything from your laptop and water bottle to lunch and even a pair of sneakers organized without making the bag feel bulky.
Keep in mind:The brand says this tote fits up to a 13-inch laptop, but during testing, we found there was a little more flexibility. A 14-inch MacBook fit with room to zip the bag closed, while a 16-inch laptop fit inside but prevented the zipper and magnetic closure from fully closing. If you regularly carry a larger laptop, it's worth checking the bag's interior dimensions before buying.
- Thoughtful organization
- Water bottle pocket and key leash
- Water-repellant
- Multiple carry options
- Top will not close over a 16" laptop
Material:Polyester | Dimensions:12 x 16 x 8 in. | Colors:13 | Closure:Zipper | Pockets:9 | Laptop compatibility:Up to 15"
Why we love it:This tote bag/duffel combo is lightweight, surprisingly roomy and soft-sided, so it's easy to pack to the brim without becoming too bulky. Multiple interior and exterior pockets help keep essentials organized and the trolley sleeve makes it easy to stack on top of rolling luggage. It also flexible enough to slide right under most airplane seats, even when full.
What experts say:"I've owned several other weekender bags at the same time and always find myself reaching for my Luka, because it's the lightest and most comfortable option," says Oh in her full Calpak Luka review . "It's easy to stuff to the brim because of the flexible material and easy to pack thanks to the many organizational compartments. And best of all, I've never had an issue with it fitting under the seat in front of me on an airplane on both domestic and international flights."
Keep in mind:The soft, flexible construction is part of what makes this duffel so easy to pack, but it won't offer the same structure or protection as a more rigid travel bag. If you're carrying fragile items or prefer a bag that stands upright on its own, a more structured option may be a better fit.
- Flexible and easy to pack or store
- 9 organizational pockets
- Lightweight
- Material isn't as durable or structured
Material:Leather | Dimensions:12.5. x 20.5. x 5 in. | Colors:11 | Closure:Zipper | Pockets:1 | Laptop compatibility:Up to 16"
Why we love it:If you're looking to invest in one luxury tote that can do it all, this one is hard to beat. Made from pebbled leather, it feels timeless and polished enough for the office yet versatile enough for errands, travel and dinner out. And despite its sleek design, it's spacious enough to fit a large laptop and daily essentials. A zip-top closure keeps everything secure.
What experts say:"The leather is pebbled and durable, so it doesnt scratch or show wearing easily. The straps are solid and sturdy and don't dig into your shoulder, even when the bag is heavy," says Director of Commerce Initiatives Jeanine Edwards . "It can easily fit my giant work laptop. It has minimal branding so it looks timeless and classic and will never go out of style. And it works with every outfit. It's just perfect!"
Keep in mind:With just one interior zip pocket and no dedicated laptop sleeve, organization is on the simpler side. If you prefer lots of compartments, Cuyana sells a coordinating organizer insert separately, though it adds to the already premium price.
- Timeless, classy design
- Spacious capacity
- Premium, long-lasting materials
- Minimal interior organization
Material:Recycled nylon | Dimensions:11.6 x 9.4 x 12.7 in. | Colors:26 | Closure:Zipper | Pockets:6 | Laptop compatibility:Up to 14"
Why we love it:Lightweight bags often sacrifice organization, but not this one. The quilted nylon construction keeps it easy to carry, while multiple pockets, a trolley sleeve and an included crossbody strap make it one of the most functional totes on our list. It's roomy enough to double as a personal item or overnight bag, too.
What experts say:"I love all the pockets," says Initiatives Editor Julia Webb . There are even "three that can be opened without unzipping the main compartment. It keeps things organized very easily." She adds that the thoughtful design means "there is a spot for everything and it comes with a longer strap so you can wear it across body. Plus, it has a trolley sleeve, so it can sit on top of rolling luggage."
Keep in mind:This tote has plenty of pockets to keep smaller essentials organized, but there's no dedicated laptop sleeve. It can fit a laptop up to 13 inches, though we recommend using a padded case for extra protection.
- Lightweight
- Great organizational features
- Multiple carry options
- No dedicated laptop sleeve
Material:Vegan leather | Dimensions:20 x 12 x 9 in. | Colors:6 | Closure:Zipper | Pockets:5 | Laptop compatibility:Up to 16"
Why we love it:Parents tend to carry a lot, and this tote is up for the challenge. With a spacious interior and plenty of room for daily essentials, it can easily accommodate everything from a laptop and water bottle to snacks, extra layers and all the miscellaneous items that seem to accumulate throughout the day. Despite its generous capacity, it has a polished, purse-like look that feels more elevated than a typical diaper bag.
What experts say:"This bag is ideal for self-proclaimed hoarders like me, since it has enough space for everything you need throughout the day," says Oh. "Ideal for anyone who leaves the house with everything you need for work, plus a packed lunch and a pair of sneakers on a regular basis."
Keep in mind:This isn't the lightest tote on our list, so if you tend to pack it to the brim, the bag can get heavy. It's best suited for those who want capacity and organization over a lightweight feel. "It's a little on the heavier side, but it looks as chic as a purse while giving you the storage potential of a weekender," says Oh.
- Polished design yet functional usage
- Lots of interior organization
- Multiple carry options
- On the heavier side
Material:Vinyl | Dimensions:18.1 x 9.9 x 14.9 in. | Colors:13 | Closure:Clasp | Pockets:2 | Laptop compatibility:N/A
Why we love it:If your tote regularly gets tossed into the back of the car, hauled to the beach or loaded up with heavy gear, the Yeti Camino is built for the job. Made from a thick, waterproof material with a molded base that helps it stay upright, it's incredibly durable and easy to clean. Despite its rugged construction, it still offers thoughtful touches like long shoulder straps and waterproof interior zip pockets to keep smaller essentials protected.
What experts say:"This hefty bucket tote feels practically indestructible. I use it for heavy-duty schlepping for large loads (think: pet supplies and dog food, beach day essentials with a bunch of towels and lunch pail, etc.)," says Teich. "It has a molded rubber bottom, so it stays upright without feeling too rigid, and the bag itself is made of an ultra-durable vinyl that resists scratches, tears and punctures and has a little flex if you still manage to overpack. I am ROUGH with this thing and it stands up to being shoved into backs of cars and poked by sharp metal latches. Best of all, you can hose it down when you're done with it."
Keep in mind:The Camino is a true workhorse, but that durability comes with some tradeoffs. At about 4 pounds empty, it's one of the heavier bags on our list, and its open-top design (secured only by a toggle clasp) isn't ideal if you're worried about items spilling out during transport.
- Waterproof, durable exterior and interior
- Easy to clean
- Stands upright
- Heavy
- Open-top design
Material:Nylon | Dimensions:12.2 x 11.8 x 7.5 in. | Colors:11 | Closure:Zipper | Pockets:1 | Laptop compatibility:Up to 13"
Why we love it:This bag has earned its enduring cult following for a reason. It's incredibly lightweight, surprisingly roomy and, best of all, folds down into a compact square that takes up almost no space in a suitcase or carry-on. That makes it an easy bag to pack "just in case," whether you're traveling, shopping or need an extra tote for the trip home. It may look slim, but it's surprisingly roomy and can easily accommodate all kinds of daily essentials.
What experts say:"I've owned two of these totes for more than 20 years and they're still in remarkably good condition, despite consistent heavy use," says Oh. "I especially love it for travel, because the nylon is so lightweight and flexible. When it's empty, it's practically paper-thin, so it's easy to tuck into a suitcase or even another tote if you want an extra bag on hand. It's also one of my favorite personal items for flights, because it squishes easily under the seat in front of you or into a crowded overhead bin. Despite being so lightweight, it's surprisingly roomy and seems to expand to fit whatever I throw inside."
Keep in mind:The Le Pliage has a fairly simple interior with just one small slip pocket, so if you like lots of built-in organization, you may find yourself reaching for smaller pouches or toiletry bags to keep essentials like your keys, wallet and chargers easy to find. Because the bag is soft and unstructured, it can also slump over or feel a bit like a catchall when it's packed full.
- Collapses down for easy packing
- Durable and flexible nylon material
- Roomy interior
- Lacks interior organization
Material:Neoprene, polyester | Dimensions:19 x 5 x 13 in. | Colors:3 | Closure:Zipper | Pockets:5 | Laptop compatibility:Up to 16"
Why we love it:A new offering from Dagne Dover, this tote has all the brand's signature thoughtful design elements that make organization foolproof — in a brand new, highly convenient size/shape. There' a dedicated laptop sleeve, a luggage sleeve, an exterior phone pocket, multiple interior pockets, a removable water bottle holder, pouches and a wristlet and a key leash.
What experts say: "This tote is pretty much the perfect everyday bag," says Teich. "Its neoprene fabric strikes the balance of structured and slouchy; it stands up on its own but isn't rigid and feels lightweight and easy to carry,." She relies heavily on the organization. "Everything has a home in this bag. It's just divine."
Keep in mind:Though the dark colors are more forgiving when it comes to stains, Teich wishes the neoprene fabric was washable. She also points out that, even though the brand claims you can fit a 16-inch laptop in the dedicated sleeve, it's a tight fit — something to keep in mind if you plan to use this bag as a commuter.
- Lightweight yet structured neoprene fabric
- Thoughtful organizational details and compartments
- Understated yet stylish design
- Spot clean only
- Doesn't quite fit a 16-inch laptop, despite brand claims
How we chose the best tote bags
Finding a great tote bag is about more than choosing the prettiest option. It has to be comfortable enough to carry every day, durable enough to stand up to heavy use and functional enough to keep your essentials organized.
To come up with this list, we surveyed nine shopping editors and two stylists to find out which tote bags they personally use and recommend the most. Because these experts spend their days evaluating fashion and lifestyle products, we prioritized picks they return to again and again — not just trendy bags.
From there, we evaluated each recommendation based on the features that matter most, including size, durability, structure, comfort and organization. We looked for details like sturdy shoulder straps, secure closures, thoughtfully placed interior pockets and dedicated laptop compartments. We also considered versatility, favoring bags that work just as well for commuting and travel as they do for everyday errands.
What to consider when shopping for tote bags
Material
The right material comes down to how you plan to use your tote. "The most important feature of a tote bag is the fabric," says Melanie DiSalvo, a textile expert and founder of A Look Behind the Seams .But regardless of which fabric you choose, quality matters. "You want your tote to have structure and to not fall apart." Here's a quick breakdown of some common players:
-
Leatheris a classic investment that develops character over time and works well for the office or everyday wear, but typically requires more care.
-
Faux/vegan leatheroffers a similar look to genuine leather at a lower price point, though it may not last as long as the real thing.
-
Nylon or polyesterare great options if you want something lightweight, durable and easy to clean, especially for commuting or travel. These fibers tend to be more affordable and long-lasting too.
-
Canvas or cottonare versatile and easy to care for, making them ideal for everyday errands or casual use. If not treated with a waterproof or waxed finish, though, they may be more prone to staining or holding onto moisture.
Size
-
Size: For most people, a tote that's 15 to 18 inches wide, 11 to 14 inches tall and 5 to 7 inches deep is the sweet spot. That size is roomy enough for everyday essentials plus a 13- or 14-inch laptop, but not so oversized that it's a pain to carry daily.
-
Capacity: "For most people, a capacity of around 10 to 15 liters strikes the right balance," says Jan Michiel Drese, an accessories designer and founder and creative director of Drese Art . "It comfortably fits daily essentials like a laptop, notebook, water bottle, wallet and a light sweater without becoming bulky or encouraging unnecessary weight."
-
Weight: The bag's overall weight matters, too. A structured leather tote may feel luxurious, but it can be noticeably heavier once you've added a laptop, water bottle and everything else you need for the day.
For everyday use, a slightly smaller silhouette may be more comfortable while still accommodating a few essentials. Think about what you'll realistically carry each day. If your tote doubles as a work bag, make sure it's large enough for your laptop, charger and any other daily essentials without feeling overstuffed.
Handles
A tote can look beautiful, but if it's uncomfortable to carry, chances are it won't become your everyday bag. These carry details will be easier on your shoulders:
-
Shoulder straps: Look for "sturdy handles that are long enough to sit comfortably on the shoulder," especially if you tend to carry heavier items, says Drese. Straps should be long enough to fit comfortably over your shoulder without the bag hanging too low. For most people, that means about a 10 to 12-inch drop from the top of the strap to the top of the bag.
-
Crossbody or convertible straps: If you regularly carry a laptop, water bottle or other heavier items, a wider strap and/or a crossbody option may also feel more comfortable, since they distribute weight more evenly and are less likely to dig into your shoulder.
Organization
The biggest downside of a roomy tote is that it can quickly become one giant catchall. Features like interior zip pockets, slip compartments, key leashes and water bottle holders make it much easier to stay organized. If you frequently carry tech, look for a dedicated and padded laptop compartment. For travel or everyday errands, secure zip closures can also provide peace of mind.
Best tote bag FAQs
What types of tote bags does every wardrobe need?
You don't need a closet full of tote bags, but having a few options can make it easier to stay organized on the go. An everyday canvas or nylon style is perfect for errands and casual outings, while a structured leather or faux leather bag works well for the office or dressier occasions.
If you travel often, consider a lightweight option that folds flat or has a luggage sleeve so it slips securely over a suitcase handle. And if you frequently carry a laptop or other tech, choose a work tote with a padded laptop compartment and plenty of organizational pockets.
