Pilates is a workout that quickly exposes bad clothing choices. The movements are slow, controlled and precise, so anything that pinches, slips or rides up becomes very obvious very fast. After more than a decade of practicing Pilates and testing athletic wear across different workouts, I've learned that the best Pilates clothes make a real difference in how smoothly your class goes.
In this story
This list includes my top Pilates-friendly picks, along with recommendations from other fitness-focused editors and professional instructors who regularly wear and test these pieces in real classes. Collectively, we practice Pilates weekly and have spent years rotating through leggings , tank tops, sports bras , socks, sweatshirts and more. Together, we looked for clothes that stay put, offer light-to-moderate support and move comfortably through stretches, twists and long holds on both the mat and the reformer.
Every piece was chosen for comfort, performance and fit — not just aesthetics. Whether you're new to Pilates or already a regular, these are the clothes that let you focus on your practice, not what you're wearing.
The best overall Pilates clothes of 2026
Materials:77% polyester, 23% spandex | Size range:XXS-3X | Length options:25", 27", 29" | Compression:Medium | Color options:11 | Care:Machine wash cold, hang dry
Why we love it:The high-rise criss-cross waistband on these leggings creates a flattering hourglass effect while offering medium compression that feels supportive without restricting movement. The matching cropped tee hits just above the waistband, leaving a subtle peek-a-boo moment at the midsection and providing the same medium compression. Together, it's a stylish, confidence-boosting workout set for Pilates, other workouts or a casual day.
What experts say:I've been really impressed by how well this Pilates set has held up. The colors are still vibrant and the buttery-soft, sculpting fabric hasn't lost its shape even after nearly a year of regular wear. It's comfortable and flattering, and I definitely have my eye on more colors.
Keep in mind:The leggings are on the thinner side, making them ideal for indoor workouts or warmer weather. That said, they're totally squat-proof, so you don't have to worry about sheerness during bends, stretches or deep holds.
The best Pilates tops
Materials:93% rayon, 7% elastane | Size range:XXS-L | Padding:unpadded | Color options:7 | Care:Not listed
Why we love it:This tank feels elevated enough to wear outside the studio while still performing in class. The ribbed fabric provides light-to-medium compression that keeps you supported, and the sleek, body-molding fit makes it comfortable without a bra.
What experts say:This is a real wardrobe staple for me — and has been for over a year now. The tank offers gentle support that doesn't require a bra and has a polished, elevated look that looks just as good with jeans as it does leggings. I especially like it for Pilates, where the snug fit stays in place through stretches, twists and long holds without needing constant adjustment.
Keep in mind:This tank doesn't have a built-in bra, so while the light support works well for Pilates and other low-impact workouts, you may want additional support for higher-impact activity or if you have a larger bust.
Materials:89% nylon, 11% spandex | Size range:2-10 | Padding:Removable padding | Color options:25 | Care:Machine wash
Why we love it:The ribbed fabric is flattering and gives the tank a polished, sleek look, while the lightweight, breathable material makes it perfect for Pilates or other workouts. The built-in bra provides all the support you need without extra layers, and the fit hugs the body without rolling up through different poses.
What experts say:I have this tank in two colors and love that it stays in place through stretches and twists, but also provides enough support to wear for even long runs. It's definitely one of the most versatile pieces of workout clothing in my closet.
Keep in mind:Sizes are limited, ranging only from 2–10, so sizing options may not accommodate everyone.
Materials:75% nylon, 25% Lycra | Size range:XS-XL | Padding:Removable padding | Color options:6 | Care:Machine wash and dry
Why we love it:This crop top is flattering and versatile, hugging the body without rolling up or digging in. The built-in bra provides light support, and the removable padding gives you the option for extra shape. The thick but breathable fabric keeps everything smooth and opaque — even in white.
What experts say:I reach for this top at least once per week. It moves seamlessly with my body and stays put through stretches and flows. I prefer the built-in bra without padding, and it still delivers subtle support and shape that's perfect for low- to medium-impact workouts.
Keep in mind:The crop length hits higher on the torso, which looks great with high-waisted leggings or shorts but may feel a bit revealing during reformer work or inversions if worn with lower-rise bottoms.
Materials:88% nylon, 12% elastane | Size range:XXS-XXL | Padding:Removable padding | Color options:18 | Care:Machine wash
Why we love it:The fabric is silky-soft, stretchy and comfortable against the skin, while the slim straps and subtle V-neck make it flattering enough to wear on its own — or under a sweater when you want support but prefer to skip a regular bra.
What experts say:Shopping editor Hannah Oh calls it "super easy to throw on and go," noting that the built-in bra provides enough light support for lower-impact workouts like reformer Pilates. She also says the straps stay put, the fit is flattering and the stretchy fabric accommodates a range of body types, making it versatile for both workouts and everyday wear.
Keep in mind:Lighter colors can be slightly sheer, so the built-in bra band may be visible, especially during stretches, twists or overhead movements in Pilates.
Best Pilates sports bras of 2026
Materials:75% recycled polyester, 25% spandex | Size range:XS-3X | Padding:Lightly lined | Color options:3 | Care:Machine wash, tumble dry
Why we love it:This Target find delivers firm, reliable support with details you usually see in pricier bras. Sizing is inclusive (up to 3X), and adjustable straps and a hook-and-eye back closure let you further customize the fit.
What experts say:"This sports bra surpasses all others I've tried, and I've experimented with numerous options, ranging from exorbitantly expensive to dirt cheap," says Stephanie Holbrook , a Level 1 USA Triathlon Coach. It keeps everything secure without slipping or shifting during stretches, reformer work or Pilates flows.
Keep in mind:The firm, high-impact support feels more structured than many Pilates-friendly bras, which may be noticeable during slower, controlled movements if you're used to softer, barely-there support. On the upside, that means great compression and support, especially if you have a larger chest.
Materials:75% nylon, 25% LYCRA | Size range:XS-XL | Padding:unpadded | Color options:14 | Care:Not listed
Why we love it:Soft and lightly supportive, this bra has a gentle, cozy feel against the skin. The square-front, scoop-back design and subtle side seams make it flattering and polished, while straps stay put without digging into shoulders, so it's comfortable enough to wear through any Pilates circuit.
What experts say:Shopping editor Elizabeth Berry prefers this bra over her others for low-impact workouts like Pilates and light strength training. "I probably wear this bra at least once a week. It is designed for less intense workouts, but I have felt supported during reformer Pilates and light strength training workouts," she said.
Keep in mind:Built for low- to medium-impact activity, this bra works well for Pilates, yoga or walking, but it may feel too soft or light for running, HIIT or for anyone with a fuller chest who needs stronger support. "The short length and the narrow band on this bra really highlight that the design is made for A to C cups only," says Teich.
Materials:87% polyester, 13% elastane | Size range:XXS-XXL | Padding:unpadded | Color options:14 | Care:Machine wash cold on gentle, tumble dry low
Why we love it:Minimal, unpadded and buttery soft, this bra delivers medium-impact support without feeling restrictive. The fabric is breathable and moisture-wicking, keeping you comfortable even in heated sculpt or mat Pilates classes.
What experts say:Shopping editor Julia Webb said it's "super soft and supportive without being restrictive," noting that it washes well and maintains its shape over time. She also loves that it sits smoothly against the body with no awkward seams — perfect for a clean, polished look and minimal rubbing or chafing during Pilates classes.
Keep in mind:This bra works best for small to medium busts. Those with a larger chest may find the support insufficient for certain movements, especially during stretches, twists or any Pilates flow that involves lying on the mat or reformer.
Best Pilates leggings & bottoms of 2026
Materials:87% polyester, 13% elastane | Size range:0-20 | Length options:23", 25", 28", 31" | Compression:Medium | Color options:8 | Care:Machine wash cold, tumble dry low
Why we love it:Soft, lightly compressive and super smooth, these leggings move with you without ever feeling restrictive. The high-rise waist stays put during every stretch, squat or Pilates move, and the side pockets make them as functional as they are flattering.
What experts say:"These are my put-on-the-pedestal leggings," said senior style editor Jessica Teich . "I find myself 'saving' them for my hardest workouts where I need to feel comfortable, confident and not think twice about my outfit. I also save them for days when I'm going to be out and about after my Pilates classes. They're just the best: lightly compressive and body-hugging without feeling restrictive in the slightest. They move with me, don't roll down at the waist and they never slip, no matter what pose I'm holding. I no longer believe in 'dupes' after trying the OGs."
Keep in mind:These leggings are on the expensive side, and "they do pill and change in texture with repeated washing," said Teich, who suggests washing them inside out alongside other athletic fabrics. And of course, the price point is a major consideration. At nearly $130, they are a huge investment.
Materials:79% nylon, 21% spandex | Size range:XS-4X | Length options:23", 25", 28" | Compression:Light | Color options:7 | Care:Machine wash
Why we love them:These leggings have a high-rise design that stays put through all kinds of mat and reformer moves. And despite the friendly price point, pros say the fabric stretches without losing shape over time.
What experts say:Senior Health Editor and certified exercise physiologist Laura Williams swears by them. "Old Navy comes close in durability to much more expensive brands while being more affordable," she said. She also praises the inclusive sizing: "I'm 6'0", so finding leggings that actually fit my height is refreshing. I own several pairs, and there's not one I don't like."
Keep in mind:Some wearers say these leggings aren't fully squat-proof — especially in the lighter colors. "Love the fit and feel. The material feels VERY thick. Until I squatted," said one reviewer .
Materials:75% nylon, 25% Lycra | Size range:XXS-3X | Length options:23", 25", 28" | Compression:Medium | Color options:14 | Care:Machine wash and dry
Why we love them:These leggings are built to handle workouts and repeated trips through the washer and dryer — a rare combo in activewear. They're thoughtfully sized with multiple lengths and inseams designed for petite, regular and tall wearers.
What experts say:Webb is "obsessed" with these leggings, and says they're particularly well-suited for someone who's tough on their activewear (and loves a Pilates class!). She says they're comfortable and supportive, and appreciates the no-slip high-waist during challenging classes when you can't afford to be distracted by your clothing.
Keep in mind:These leggings are a favorite of multiple Yahoo Shopping product testing experts, who collectively struggle to find any drawbacks; a rare feat for any products, let alone clothing.
Materials:87% polyester, 13% elastane| Size range:XXS-XL | Length options:30" | Color options:5 | Care:Machine wash cold on gentle, tumble dry low
Why we love it:For those who prefer a roomier fit, these joggers are soft, stretchy and easy to move in without being so loose that you risk getting tangled up during class. The wide waistband hugs without squeezing, and the adjustable drawstring allows for a customized fit to keep everything secure.
What experts say:"The waistband and legs of the pants are stretchy enough for moving around, and the pants are fitted enough that they don't get in the way of workouts," said shopping editor Kristin Granero . "To me, they offer a bit more coverage than yoga pants, and they're incredibly comfy for running errands."
Keep in mind:At 5'4", Granero says these joggers rest at the backs of her ankles, giving full coverage without bunching. Petite frames may find the legs a bit long, so you might need to cuff or hem them for the best fit.
Materials:82% nylon, 18% elastane | Size range:XS-4X | Length options:3", 5", 7", 9" | Compression:Light | Color options:29 | Care:Machine wash cold
Why we love it:Lightweight, comfortable and versatile, these shorts are perfect for Pilates or low- to medium-impact workouts and secure enough for more intense sessions like running. The high waistband provides subtle tummy control, while the roomy legs let you move freely.
What experts say:I've been wearing these shorts for more than a year now, and appreciate how well they move with the body without riding up, bunching or shifting. The built-in inner shorts are a standout feature, preventing any peek-a-boo moments during stretches or leg lifts — something that doesn't always deliver in workout shorts.
Keep in mind:The outer layer may shift slightly during certain stretches or leg lifts, revealing the inner shorts. That said, the coverage is still substantial, so you can move freely and stay comfortable without worrying about unintended exposure.
The est accessories for Pilates
Materials:80% cotton, 15% nylon, 5% spandex | Size range:One size | Color options:8 | Care:Not listed
Why we love it:Our editors say these socks stay up and provide excellent grip on both mat and reformer, making them reliable for Pilates or barre. The ribbed design and subtle bow on the back are small, stylish details that don't compromise performance.
What experts say:Shopping editor Amanda Garrity says " Once I started going to Pilates more regularly, I splurged on Lucky Honey socks and I haven't looked back. These ribbed ones with a bow on the back are hands-down my favorite — they make me so happy whenever I wear them!" She adds that they stay in place throughout class and maintain their grip and shape even after months of regular use.
Keep in mind:At $16 a pair, these socks are pricey, and some reviewers say they're thin and that the bows have a tendency to fall off. Even so, Garrity says their durability and reliable grip make them a worthwhile investment for regular Pilates-goers.
Materials:70% cotton, 30% polyester | Size range:XS/S-XL/XXL | Color options:7 | Care:Machine wash with like colors, tumble dry low
Why we love it:The cropped style and half-zip design make this hoodie easy to throw on and take off, while the heavy, structured fabric makes it perfect for layering before or after a Pilates workout. It's versatile enough to wear with leggings for class or jeans for an all-day, put-together look.
What experts say:I wear this sweatshirt at least once per week — sometimes for exercise, sometimes as a casual all-day layer. It provides enough coverage to keep me warm en route to class, then I usually toss it aside once I get warmed up.
Keep in mind:While the fabric is thick and durable, repeated washing and sun exposure may cause color changes over time, especially in deeper hues. The brown version I have faded faster than expected, so consider this if you're eyeing a darker shade.
How we tested the best Pilates clothes
To determine the best Pilates clothes, I relied on a mix of hands-on testing and expert insight. I work out six days a week and regularly rotate Pilates into that routine, which allowed me to wear each piece across multiple sessions and over time.
I sought additional input from Pilates instructors, as well as Yahoo's Pilates-obsessed editors who try and review athletic wear year-round and have a strong sense of how leggings, bras and tops hold up with repeated wear and washing, and specifically in Pilates classes. Each item was evaluated for fit, comfort and performance in a Pilates setting:
-
Leggings were assessed for opacity, support and whether they stayed in place throughout class.
-
Sports bras were judged on support and comfort without feeling restrictive.
-
Tops needed to move with the body without riding up or bunching.
-
Socks were evaluated for fit, style and grip.
We also considered price and durability; only clothing that consistently delivered comfort, performance and wearability made the final list.
What to consider when shopping for Pilates clothes
Material
Most Pilates clothes are made from nylon or polyester blends with elastane (also called spandex) for stretch, says Anouska Shenn, a certified Pilates instructor and founder of corporate wellness agency The Office Yoga Company . Both fabrics offer durability, shape retention and dry quickly, though they feel slightly different on the skin.
-
Nylonis softer and often smoother, sometimes with a lightly brushed or velvety finish that feels gentle and less slick against the body.
-
Polyesterhas slightly better moisture-wicking properties, so it can feel cooler and drier in warm or heated classes.
Durability and construction
Pilates clothes get a lot of repeated wear and washing, so construction matters. Look for flat-lock seams, which are stitched so the edges of the fabric lie flat against the skin instead of overlapping, says Shenn. This makes them more comfortable, reduces rubbing or chafing and helps the garment last longer. Avoid buttons, zips or bulky hardware, which can dig in or feel awkward when you're lying on a mat or reformer.
Opacity
High-quality fabrics should stay completely opaque through stretches, squats and reformer movements. Williams recommends the squat test for opacity: "Do that deep squat in front of a mirror and check whether your underwear shows through," she says, noting it's helpful to wear a bright color like red or teal to really put the opacity to the test.
You can also check by deeply stretching the garment and checking to see if your fingers show through. Stretching the fabric between your hands and holding it up to the light also works. If it stays the same color when it's stretched and you can't see through it, you're probably good.
Support
Light to moderate compression is ideal for Pilates. You want enough support to feel held through the core and hips without restricting movement or breath. If you're taking reformer classes with a jump board, compression leggings can also help minimize muscle vibration and reduce fatigue, says Shenn.
Moisture-wicking capabilities
Pilates isn't usually a sweat-soaked workout, so moisture-wicking is helpful but not the top priority. Breathable fabrics that keep you comfortable without overheating are usually more important than ultra-high sweat management.
Fit
Stretchy, form-fitting clothes work best for both mat and reformer classes. Loose or flared styles and dangling straps can get in the way or get caught on equipment. They also make it harder for instructors to check alignment.
Best pilates clothes FAQs
What are the best clothes to wear for Pilates?
The best Pilates clothes are stretchy, form-fitting pieces that move with you — think leggings, fitted tops and supportive sports bras. Avoid loose clothing or dangling straps, which can get in the way or make it harder for instructors to check your alignment. Grippy socks are helpful for reformer classes, and lightweight, breathable layers are smart for heated sessions. Look for fabrics that offer light compression, stay opaque through stretches and feel comfortable against the skin.
What should I not wear to Pilates?
Avoid loose, flared or baggy clothing, dangling straps or anything that could get caught on the reformer or get in your way during stretches.
Can you wear loose clothes to Pilates?
You're better off sticking to form-fitting, stretchy pieces that move with your body. Loose clothes can be distracting and potentially dangerous, and they make it harder for instructors to check your alignment.
What is the best material for Pilates clothes?
The best Pilates clothes are made from stretchy, breathable fabrics that move with you and hold their shape. Nylon or polyester blends with elastane (spandex) are top choices. Nylon feels soft and skin-friendly, while polyester handles moisture well — especially in warm or heated classes.
Do I need different clothes for mat vs. reformer Pilates?
No. The same clothing that works well for reformer Pilates is also ideal for mat classes. In both settings, you want pieces that stay put, offer light-to-moderate support and allow for a full range of motion. The main exception is heated Pilates or sculpt-style classes, says Heather Andersen, founder of New York Pilates . These classes call for lightweight layers you can peel off as class goes on.
How do I care for my Pilates clothes?
Wash Pilates clothes inside out in cold water on a gentle cycle and avoid fabric softeners, which can affect stretch and moisture-wicking properties. Hang or lay flat to dry instead of using the dryer to maintain shape and improve longevity.
