When it comes to style, things get a little trickier. Crowning one piece of clothing the "best" for everyone based on a single person's experience just isn't realistic — especially for something as personal as swimwear. That's why we believe in gathering a wide range of feedback. And while customer reviews and ratings can be helpful, we also know they don't always tell the full story and can sometimes be unreliable.

That's why every swimsuit we recommend is hands-on tested not just by our expert style editors (who, yes, touch, test and try on every single suit), but by a panel of real-world testers ages 25 to 71 with a wide range of body types, sizes (from 00 to 18) and personal style preferences. They wear one-pieces, bikinis and tankinis while swimming, lounging, tanning, hot tubbing and more, logging over 40 total hours of testing before completing an in-depth, 30-question survey for each suit.

Research

Our style experts begin with extensive market research informed by decades of experience testing clothing and working in fashion. We round up bestselling styles from swim brands we already know and trust, then dig into social media buzz and Reddit threads to uncover hidden gems and under-the-radar trends. Our team also attends press previews and regularly meets with designers and brands to stay on top of emerging labels, new launches and innovations shaping the swimwear space.

We also regularly consult field experts to bring a well-rounded perspective to our testing process — from lingerie specialists who advise on fit and support to professional athletes who evaluate durability and how well a swimsuit stays in place through repeated movement and stress testing.

From there, we cross-check our (often long) shortlist against customer reviews and feedback to see whether each suit lives up to its claims in real-world wear. Swimwear with unreasonable pricing, limited sizing or poor availability is typically eliminated during this stage. Only after all of that do we get our hands on each finalist to test and compare them in real life.

Fit

How a swimsuit fits and feels is perhaps the most important factor of all. It needs to fit snugly and securely without digging in. A major criterion for us? Whether or not it fits true to size. After all, we're vouching for items that are often only sold online! We provide resulting feedback on when to size up or down, based on our findings.

We pay close attention to size range and whether swimsuits and bikini tops are offered in bra sizing (cup and band) rather than standard number or letter sizing, which often allows for a more precise fit. Adjustability matters too: We prioritize features like adjustable straps, removable padding and other customizable design elements that help a suit adapt comfortably to a wide range of bodies and fit preferences.

Comfort and coverage

Testers and experts score each suit for its stretch and comfort, including whether the top and bottom both fit well. We love a stretchy suit that doesn't dig into the skin or sheer out and sag when wet.

The level of coverage our testers prefer ranges from cheeky, high-cut styles to true, full-coverage bottoms, so our pros check each suit's fabrication to confirm its coverage level matches the brands' claims (and note otherwise, when necessary). We also have testers score whether or not the suit felt secure and supportive from top to bottom.

Quality and durability

For quality, our pros first conduct a visual inspection, inspecting seams for uniformity, noting any potential unraveling or imperfections. We look at how any buttons or embellishments are attached. We also score the fabric for quality and softness before putting each swimsuit through the wringer to gauge durability.

We simulate the wear-and-tear a bathing suit usually goes through by dunking it in fresh water, salt water and chlorinated water. We rinse them out and either hand-wash them or send them through a washing machine cycle, depending on each one's care instructions. After they air-dry, we re-inspect them to see if the quality, fit and stretch is affected.

Meanwhile, our real-world testers put these suits through their paces — because after all, there's no swimsuit test like the ones we put them through IRL. They swim laps, body surf at the beach and soak in pools and hot tubs before laundering the suits repeatedly and reporting on how they hold up over time, including whether the fabric stretches out, snags or maintains its shape.

Then comes the stretch test. Because nobody wants to discover halfway through vacation that their swimsuit turns see-through when wet, we evaluate each fabric for opacity both relaxed and stretched — then repeat the process once the material is fully saturated with water. And yes, we've seen some $250 swimsuits flunk this test!

Ease of use

Tricky clasps and hooks that you have to recruit a helping hand to secure or undo? Forget about it. We have each of our testers rate their swimsuits for overall ease of use, including how simple it is to customize and secure fit, including using any unique features like adjustable straps, self-tying halters or corset-style bodices.

And because there's nothing worse than wrestling up a tangled suit when all you want to do is jump in the water, or struggling to peel off a damp, cold swimsuit at the end of a long beach day, we also score how easy it is to get in and out of the suit. Testers weigh in on whether or not they were able to comfortably get changed, or whether the fit required major shimmying and stretching.

Appearance and satisfaction

A swimsuit can ace all of the tests above and still not land on our final list of recommendations. That's because ultimately, if it doesn't make you feel fabulous and confident, it's not a good suit. Full stop. Even the coolest, trendiest or most innovative swimsuit is nothing if it doesn't make its owner feel great.
