If you have big summer travel on the horizon, you're probably in full planning mode, figuring out flights, accommodations and sight-seeing. And if you're in the market for a new suitcase to take on your trip, I'd bet one of my hard-earned dollars that you're looking into hard-side luggage. It's everywhere — it seems to be shoppers' preference, if not the norm now. It is trendy? Yes, but there's more to it than that. Its durable, rigid exoskeleton means it's less likely to be crushed or otherwise damaged in cargo holds and overhead compartments. It's also weather-resistant by design and can be easily wiped clean.
Hard-side luggage
is not without flaws, though, especially if you wind up with a poorly constructed bag. The downside to all that durability is that it can be unyielding, which can lead to cracking, splitting or denting under particularly rough treatment. It's also not as expandable as soft-sided pieces, making it difficult to cram in extra items. Finally, it can also be heavy and more prone to scratches and scuffs.
That's why it's crucial to select the best hard-shell luggage that actually strikes a good balance of space, durability and performance while also being lightweight and easy to maneuver — and the picks on our list check all those boxes.
In this story
As someone who averages more than 100 travel days a year, I generally live out of a carry-on more often than I live in my apartment, so I know a lot about what makes a good bag (and a bad one). We interviewed travel experts, frequent fliers, over-packers and suitcase-living warriors to find the best luggage . Finally, our editors tested and reviewed bags for durability, ease of use, quality, value and, of course, performance to determine this list.
Best hard-shell luggage for 2026
Exterior dimensions: 26.5" x 17.75" x 11.75" | Interior dimensions: 24" x 17.5" x 11.5" | Weight: 8.34 lbs. | Capacity: Not listed | Expandable: Yes | Shell material:Polycarbonate | Interior pockets:1 | Exterior pockets: 0 | TSA lock:Yes | On-board battery:None | Colors: 9
Why we love it:For a checked bag that strikes the balance of maneuverability, durability and longevity, our pick is this Samsonite polycarbonate case. It's a favorite of travel experts and editors alike. Additionally, it's expandable, a rare feature for hard-shell luggage, especially at a budget price.
What our experts say:According to travel expert Peter Hamdy , who owns New Zealand-based Auckland and Beyond Tours, this luggage is both sleek and has a spacious interior, which is essential for efficient packing.
What reviewers say:"The hard polycarbonate shell feels rugged enough to handle baggage handlers without showing every scuff, and the textured finish helps hide scratches, so it keeps looking good after multiple trips," said one reviewer, who added: "The expansion zipper adds just enough space for souvenirs or that extra sweater, and the interior divider and cross-straps keep clothes relatively organized."
Keep in mind: Some reviewers say Samsonite "missed the mark with these wheels," making maneuvering the bag difficult. A few even reported that the wheels completely fell off, although others praised their smoothness and durability. You'll need to consider your packing load and travel terrain, just in case.
- Durable, expandable polycarbonate design
- Budget-friendly price
- Relatively lightweight
- Issues reported with wheels
Exterior dimensions: 21.7" x 14.4" x 9" | Interior dimensions: 20.1" x 13.9" x 7.5" | Weight: 7.5 lbs. | Capacity: 41 L | Expandable: No | Shell material:Polycarbonate | Interior pockets:4 | Exterior pockets: 0 | TSA lock:Yes | On-board battery:None | Colors: 7
Why we love it:If there's one suitcase that catapulted hard-side luggage into the zeitgeist, it's Away's Carry-on. Vogue called it “the perfect carry-on” in 2016 before it was even available for purchase. The New York Times called it “the suitcase of the summer” in 2018. And it's only become more popular, earning its cult-favorite reputation for being luggage that performs and lasts . It's — by far — our team's favorite carry-on luggage for its performance, ease of use and ubiquitous look.
What our experts say:The wheels glide like a hot knife through butter, says Director of Commerce Initiatives Jeanine Edwards , who has taken her Away on all her travels over the past six years. "They turn in all directions like a dream and work just as well on carpet as they do on hard floors," she says. It measures in at just around the recommended size for overhead bin compatibility, so there are "no worries about last-minute bag checks," says Senior Deals Writer Carrie McCabe . (Note that it's worth double-checking specific airline guidance if you're taking an international flight or smaller airline.) And despite its slim size, Senior Commerce Editor Rory Halperin says, “it's incredible how much you can pack in." That's thanks to the brand's signature interior compression system.
What reviewers say:"I appreciate the interior zippered compartments," said one shopper. "It makes it a lot easier to pack." Another added, "The biggest pull for me was the lifetime warranty. That’s what sold me ... If a wheel breaks or something happens to the handle, Away will fix it for the life of the product."
Keep in mind:This model lacks expansion capability and external pockets, so you'll need to pack carefully.
- Top-rated by travel pros
- Easy to use and pack
- Durable, with a lifetime warranty
- No external pockets or expansion
- Pricey
Exterior dimensions: 21.7" x 14.8" x 10" | Interior dimensions: 20.9" x 13.6" x 9.5" | Weight: 6.8 lbs. | Capacity: 34 L | Expandable: Yes | Shell material:Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene | Interior pockets:3 | Exterior pockets: 0 | TSA lock:None | On-board battery:None | Colors: 5
Why we love it: Finding a hard-shell carry-on for around $50 is difficult — add in one with an expansion panel and thoughtful organizational pockets, and it would seem nearly impossible if not for this stout Amazon Basics pick.
What our experts say:It's made with textured acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, which keeps the weight low (it's the lightest-weight luggage on our list) while still offering reasonable durability.
What reviewers say:"I’m thoroughly impressed with how this suitcase was designed," said one reviewer , who "absolutely recommends" this luggage. "One side had the straps I typically use for clothes. The other side had just as much room, and you are able to close the section with a zipper. There are mesh pouches as well, and then even more room to fit some of those last-minute packing items."
Keep in mind: When it comes to hard-shell luggage, lighter weight often correlates with lower durability. This product received mixed reviews on the durability of the handles. This suitcase also measures 0.8 inches wider than our general recommendation of a carry-on no bigger than 22" x 14" x 9" for overhead bin compatibility, so it's worth double-checking the specific instructions provided by your airline.
- Our most affordable pick
- Lightest-weight luggage on our list
- Generous capacity with expansion
- Not as high-quality as others
Exterior dimensions: 19.25" x 12" x 29.5" | Interior dimensions: Not listed | Weight: 9.23 lbs. | Capacity: 95 L | Expandable: Yes | Shell material:Aluminum, polycarbonate | Interior pockets:1 | Exterior pockets: 0 | TSA lock:No | On-board battery:None | Colors: 6
Why we love it:Whether you're an overpacker, packing for your family or headed out on a long-term journey, if you need luggage that offers a ton of space without a ton of heft — and at a stunningly low price for the size — this is likely the right pick for you.
What our experts say: I'm personally amazed that this 95-liter suitcase weighs under 10 pounds — just a hair more than some of our more durable carry-on picks. The flat panels and straight edges mean you can really maximize the packing space (and make it easier to store neatly when you're home too).
What reviewers say: "It’s really perfect for everyone who overthinks and packs basically their whole house when they’re leaving, or just for people who buy a lot of stuff and need somewhere to pack it when going home," said one reviewer.
Keep in mind: Understandable given the price, one reviewer noted that "the material feels just a tad bit flimsier than I expected, but it's held up decently enough for me." It's not the most durable luggage on the market (hence its light weight), and some users say it could dent or even crack if handled too roughly.
- Budget-friendly
- Lightweight yet huge capacity
- Expandable for even more space
- Not very durable
Exterior dimensions: 31.75" x 20.75" x 12.75" | Interior dimensions: Not listed | Weight: 12.5 lbs. | Capacity: 124 L | Expandable: Yes | Shell material:Polycarbonate | Interior pockets:3 | Exterior pockets: 0 | TSA lock:Yes | On-board battery:None | Colors: 7
Why we love it:If you're looking for maximum durability and good space at a wallet-friendly price, this XL Delsey bag is the one for you. Our testers and reviewers alike swear it's tougher and can withstand more than any other case on the market at this price. "I've owned this Delsey suitcase for over six years and have used it more times than I can count," said Moriba Cummings, a former Yahoo shopping writer. "After all these years, it still looks brand new."
What our experts say: Since 2017, this has been the go-to bag for Jeremy Tarr , digital editorial director at Fodor's Travel — a huge statement for someone who's been to more than 45 countries and takes five-plus major trips a year. "I've taken it all over the world, rolled it along countless cobblestone streets, watched it tumble off airport carousels and roll down hills, and yet, it lives another day. The wheels are starting to look a little weathered, and there are plenty of scuffs and battle scars, but it remains my constant travel companion."
What reviewers say: Reviewers love this case for international travel. "I have made 11 round trips to the Philippines and to several of the Islands. I have traveled to Singapore and back to the U.S.," said one shopper . "This bag has held up well." Another said they've used it "to travel all over the world multiple times, dragged across cobbles, carpet, stairs, running to the train, in the rain [and] have carried bottles of wine, shells, all kinds of stuff and no breakage."
Keep in mind:All that durability means thicker polycarbonate, which makes this piece a bit heavier than others on the list, and some reviewers say it scratches easily. It's a solid trade-off if your chief priority is keeping your belongings safe and sound.
- Affordable
- Expandable hardshell
- Tough exterior
- Long-lasting
- Heavier than others
- May scuff easily
Exterior dimensions: 28.5" x 18" x 12" (large); 21” x 13” x 9” (carry-on) | Interior dimensions: 26.5" x 18" x 10.75" (large); 19" x 13" x 9" (carry-on) | Weight: 11 lbs; 7.3 lbs. | Capacity: 93 L; 36 L | Expandable: Yes | Shell material:Polycarbonate | Interior pockets:5 | Exterior pockets: 0 | TSA lock:Yes | On-board battery:None | Colors: 2
Why we love it:After years of product testing, Senior Commerce Writer Kristin Granero says Calpak remains her top travel brand. “The Evry, in particular, boasts a hard polycarbonate case for added durability, internal compartments for easy organization and an expandable center zipper — complete with TSA-approved locks — for additional wiggle room,” she says. Each bundle comes with a large checked bag, a carry-on (which should easily fit in most overhead bins, based on our recommendation of staying under 22" x 14" x 9"), a five-piece packing cube set and a luggage tag.
What our experts say:Calpak suitcases "do everything I need and have held up well across multiple continents (using trains, planes and automobiles)," said Madison Blancaflor , managing editor at The Points Guy . She's been loyal to the brand for nearly a decade, noting: "They’re sturdy and last a long time for the price point." Better yet, "they do sales fairly regularly, so you can get a two-piece set in the $300 range."
What reviewers say: "Sturdy and lightweight, easy to move around," said one. "Beautiful on the outside and organized and spacious on the inside. So far, I have used it to fly across the country for an 11-day trip, and it survived well from its 6.5-hour flight with just some scuff marks."
Keep in mind:"Like any luggage set, it gets a few scuffs after a while (especially the larger checked luggage that gets tossed around airport baggage carousels)," said Blancaflor, but even still, she stands by the durability.
- Sturdy without being bulky
- Long-lasting durability
- Great interior organization
- Scuffs easily
- Limited colors
Exterior dimensions: 30" x 21" x 11" | Interior dimensions: 28" x 20" | Weight: 13 lbs. | Capacity: 87 L | Expandable: No | Shell material:Polycarbonate | Interior pockets:4 | Exterior pockets: 0 | TSA lock:Yes, two | On-board battery:None | Colors: 8
Why we love it: A suitcase that doesn't zip doesn't immediately evoke feelings of security, but that's exactly what this double-lock bag promises to be: ultra secure. Instead of zipping shut, it locks shut with two TSA-approved locks that you can set to whatever code(s) you choose. It's equipped with tons of pockets and compartments for thoughtful organization.
What our experts say: "Monos' bestselling Check-In is arguably the best, most secure large suitcase I've tried," said Cummings. "Its water-resistant polycarbonate shell and aluminum frame with corner guards have helped it maintain its shape. My suitcase has a tiny dent in the upper right corner after getting tossed around by baggage handlers, but the inside looks as good as new."
What reviewers say: "These are sturdy, lightweight bags and no zippers! They open and close easily, are totally secure, and the color is beautiful," said one. Another concurred: "It's beautiful and unique without screaming and drawing unwanted attention, wonderfully organized and glides like it's flying," said another.
Keep in mind: At its steep price, I'd expect this luggage to come with every bell and whistle possible, so I'm a little surprised that it lacks an on-board battery and expansion. Still, Monos calls its luggage "virtually unbreakable" and stands behind it with a lifetime warranty.
- Secure, zipperless design
- Two combination locks for added security
- Thoughtful organization features
- Expensive
Exterior dimensions: 21.5" x 15" x 8.5" | Interior dimensions: 20" x 14.5" x 8.5" | Weight: 7.4 lbs. | Capacity: 42 L | Expandable: No | Shell material:Polycarbonate | Interior pockets:3 | Exterior pockets: 0 | TSA lock:Yes | On-board battery:Yes | Colors: 8
Why we love it:Lost luggage is a rite of passage into a club no one wants to be a part of: According to one report , around 33.4 million bags were "mishandled" in 2024. That's why I love and appreciate the integrated, trackable TSA lock on July's CaseSafe line, which pairs directly with Apple and Android devices. It's also one of the only suitcases on our list that comes with an on-board battery.
What our experts say: It's hard to believe this is the first suitcase that features an on-board tracker. In my opinion, all luggage should come with built-in tracking. (Disclaimer: I've lost multiple suitcases). As for the usability, July "has exceeded my expectations in both craftsmanship and design," said Cummings. "It looks and feels just as luxe as it does in the photo. I also love that this hard-side suitcase is crush-proof with aluminum bumpers to protect it from hard drops."
What reviewers say: "This bag is extremely spacious. It looks great [and] it fits a remarkable amount of items," said one. "It's light and very easy to move. The battery pack is handy. The price point is great."
Keep in mind:Several reviewers called this luggage "heavy," and they "wish it was lighter," with one adding, "You can pack a lot and the size meets regulations, but it falls apart if they weigh your carry-on!" (Note that this carry-on is an inch wider than the dimensions we generally recommend — 22" x 14" x 9" — for maximizing your chances of overhead bin compatibility on most airlines.) That said, its listed weight is the same as our top pick, the Away Carry-on, and overhead bin size varies by airline. Finally, the CaseSafe doesn't expand or have exterior pockets.
- Integrated tracking device
- High-quality construction
- Our only pick with an on-board battery
- Expensive
- May be heavy for some
How we chose the best hard-side luggage
Our team of editors and professional product reviewers personally tested and sought insight from leading travel experts to find the best hard-shell luggage. For this latest update (Jan. 2026), we spent more than 20 hours researching brands, vetting user reviews and scouring Reddit to better understand the market. We then spent an additional five hours interviewing experts, and used our own expertise gained from reviewing travel accessories for more than a decade to come up with an initial list.
To narrow down to our top picks, we tested luggage for attributes like performance, ease of use, durability and value. We considered questions like: Does the luggage move smoothly over varied terrain? Is the handle easy to operate and comfortable to use? Are there smartly-designed compartments, pockets and thoughtful features? Does it stand up to repeated use and tough handling? Does it feel sturdy and secure? Is it a reasonable weight? Does it have useful add-ons like TSA locks or on-board batteries?
After crunching the numbers and considering the insights, we came to this list of luggage that we have, would and will continue to recommend even to our closest family, friends, parents and, of course, you.
Factors to consider when choosing hard-side luggage
✓ Size: Whether it's a carry-on or large checked bag, you'll first have to make a selection based on your needs.
-
"Carry-onsare perfect for quick weekend trips," said Catarina Mello, travel creator at Professional Traveler . You'll want a "carry-on to be reliably allowed across all the major airlines," said Blancaflor. "Some bags may be labeled as carry-ons but won't actually fit in an overhead bin on some airlines," she added, so do your research.
-
While airlines have various guidelines for acceptable sizes, we recommend a carry-on size of no larger than 22" x 14" x 9", which is the smallest allowance for domestic flights. For international travel, you might want to opt even smaller depending on the airline you're taking.
-
-
"Medium luggageis a good option for trips that are a week or two," Mello added. If you're flying, bags of this size will have to be checked.
-
"A large suitcaseis ideal for longer trips or trips to cold destinations where you might have to pack heavy jackets, thick layers and bulky shoes," Mello said. Don't exceed the maximum checked luggage size of 62 linear inches (the sum of the length, width and depth).
✓ Weight: Pay attention to how much the piece of luggage weighs when empty. You'll need to be able to lift it and remove it from your vehicle, the baggage claim carousel or, in the case of carry-ons, the overhead bin. Checked bags can't exceed 50 pounds fully packed, and while a lighter hard-shell suitcase will allow you to add more of your belongings, it that may be less durable than more substantial construction or thicker materials.
✓ " Durability [and material]is crucial for withstanding rough handling during transit," said Ritesh Raj, CEO of travel website CuddlyNest . Added Blancaflor: "I want something I can confidently toss around (and let get tossed around by airport baggage workers) without worrying it'll break or let anything inside break. I want it to be easy to carry around. For me, that means a hard-shell roller bag." We like polycarbonate best for hard-shell luggage. It's highly durable, crush-resistant and long-lasting.
✓ Maneuverabilitycan greatly impact your travel comfort," Raj says. Make sure the luggage rolls smoothly and stays upright whether it's packed full or light. It should be easy to pull and push, and the handles (both the telescopic and side helper handles) should be comfortable to use and adjust.
✓ Built-in battery: Hamdy recommends looking for options that have built-in charging ports for peace of mind and convenience; you never know when you'll need to juice up on a long flight or unexpected delay. July is the only luggage on this list that features a built-in battery. If you plan to bring your own, make sure that the battery is under 2 grams of lithium per lithium metal (non-rechargeable) battery or 100 watt hours (Wh) per lithium ion (rechargeable) battery to stay compliant with TSA standards .
✓ TSA-approved lock: "A built-in combination lock is another desirable feature that adds security and peace of mind," said Tarr. Neither our most affordable checked or most affordable carry-on hard-shell luggage have TSA locks; the rest of the picks on our list have them built in.
✓ Expansion capability:Having the ability to expand your luggage can be extremely helpful, but expansion capability isn't a given on hard-shell luggage. Interestingly, the more affordable bags on our list feature expansion while the luxury options don't. Of the ones that do, you can gain up to two inches of extra space — just be sure the expanded measurements still fit the airline's size restrictions if you're traveling by plane.
✓ Aesthetic:You should like the way your bag looks! "I like my luggage to fit my style (something I won’t mind being in photographs with me)," says Blancaflor. Opting for standard black may not be in your best interest, she says. It should "be just unique enough that I can easily pick it out on a baggage carousel at the airport."
Is hard-shell luggage better than soft-shell?
"Hard-shell luggage weighs more, but it is far more durable and has a tough exterior, which will offer more protection, keeping your things safe," said Meg Jerrard, travel writer at Solo Female Travelers . "It's a far better choice if you want something that's easy to move around, and if you're traveling with breakables or valuables. Hard-shell suitcases particularly come in handy if you get caught in the rain or snow, as they are much more weatherproof than softshell options, giving your stuff protection from getting wet."
