捕鯨反対運動 Anti-whaling movement
日本の試験捕鯨にはアメリカ（オランダ国旗を掲げている）のシーセパードという団体が現場での妨害をくりかえしている。オーストラリア政府も国際機関に日本の捕鯨を提訴する準備をしていると聞いた。また、数年前に和歌山でのイルカ漁の様子が映画になり、外国で反対運動が行われている様子が報道された。たしか外国の活動家が日本にも来て運動していた。クジラもイルカも私は食べることはないし、鯨は昔に食べたことはあるが、おいしいものではなかった。これが禁止されても我々の生活には影響ないことなので、反対運動にも関心がなかった。最近ケネディー大使がイルカ漁は非人間的だとツイッターで述べて、日本政府に抗議の意を示したと聞いた。また、つい最近読んだ外国の新聞記事では，和歌山のイルカ漁は残酷でその映像は見るに絶えないというような意見をのせて、禁止を求めていた。漁師は慣れていて感じないだろうが、特に外国人にはそう思えるらしい。私も子供の頃、釣りをして、魚から針を外すのに血だらけになっても平気だったが、最近久し振りにやると残酷に感じる。それにしても牛や豚は世界中の人が食べていて、残酷とは感じないので、反対運動はない。それに対してイルカや鯨を食べるのを残酷と感じるのは文化の違いで個人の勝手だが、牛や豚を食べて鯨に反対するのは根拠がないと思える。日本では仏教により、4本足の動物を食べるのは禁じられてきて、これを食べる外国人は野蛮と考えられていたが、海の生物は食べてきた。これらの反対運動を反面教師として、日本人が回教やキリスト教などの外国の宗教やそれに基づく慣習、生活様式を批判するには注意が必要だなと感じた。 Japan's research whaling has faced strenuous protest by US-based Green Peace in Antarctic ocean. I hear that Australia government prepares to file the suit to the international court. In a similar movement catching dolphin in Wakayama had been filmed by a foreign producer and released to the world. After this film there were demonstrations against the dolphin fishing around the world. Today we don't eat whale or dolphin. I have ever eaten whale meat, but it was not tasty. Banning whaling and dolphin fishing would not affect us at all. So I had not been much interested in these movement. Recently I heard that US ambassadar Kennedy criticized dolphin fishing by tweeting it is inhumane. I also read an article in a foreign journal that said the way Japanese fishermen catch and kill dolphin is cruel. Those fishermen must be accustomed to their way of killing and numb to its cruelty. I have a similar experience. When I did fishing in my boyhood, I had to take a fish off a hook and it became bloody. But I did not feel cruel then. Now if I do the same thing, I will find it very cruel. We all eat cow and pork, and nobody say it is cruel. Then how can we jusity blaming others' custom of eating whale and dolphin ? We Japanese did not eat animals with four legs, but ate marine lives in the past following Buddhism teaching, and those who eat animals were considered as barbarians. Anti-whaling (and anti-dolphine fishing) movement made me realize that we should be careful when we criticize customs and life styles of other religions.

アラブの暴動 Unrest in Arab
シリア問題の国際会議はやっぱり行き止まり状態のようだ。アサド政権と反政府側の暴動は泥沼化しており、寒さの中で非難している住民の悲惨な状態が報道されている。かって訪れた市街地が破壊されている写真を見ると、この騒動の悲惨さが実感されて、独裁政権の中でも幸せそうだった人々の姿が思い出される。イラク戦争のさなかにアラブの国にいたが、アメリカはイラクの石油に対する関心から戦争を起こしたと幾人かの現地の人が言うのを聞いた。しかし今のエジプト、シリア、レバノン、アメリカが撤退した後のイラクの動乱は石油とは直接の関係はなさそうだ。シリア、レバノン、イラクの場合は、イスラム教内の宗派の争いで、イランとサウジアラビアが後ろにいると言われている。現地にいる日本人はアラブ騒動の多くを単純にイスラム教のせいにする人が多かった。私には、過酷な気象からくるイスラムの教えの厳しさと貧困、特に若者の失業が主な原因だと感じられていた。 There seems to be no progres in the international connference on Syria issue as expected. The civil war between Assad regime and rebels appears to be trapped in deep quagmire. Many civilian refugees are now suffering in cold weather. Watching destroyed buildings and streets on TV where I used to visit, I realized how miserable this war is. At the same time I remembered people who looked happy under the authoritarian regime. I was in an Arab country at the time of Iraq war and heard several people said that US invaded Iraq due to its interest in oil. But the recent unrests in Egypt, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq are not directly related to oil. In the case of Sylia, Lebanon and Iraq Islamic sectarian dispute is main cause and each sect is backed by either Iran or Saudi Arabia.My Japanese colleagues who worked with me in an Arab country attributed all the unrests in Arab countries simply to the characteristics of Islam religion. But I thought that it could be due to the Islam teachings influenced by the harsh climate and the poverty, especially unemployment of the youth.

中国に追い抜かれるアメリカ China will replace US as top economic power
日本がＧＤＰで中国に抜かれて世界で第3位になった時には、予想されたこととはいいながらあまり良い気持ちでなかった人が多かった。現在1位のアメリカは少なくとも2017年には中国に抜かれて2位になると予測されており、40％のアメリカ人が良くないことだと考えているという調査結果があるそうだ。アメリカ紙の記事によると、しかしGDPは国全体の経済の大きさだけを示しており、生活の質はアメリカが中国よりははるかに高い。例えば一人当たりのＧＤＰはこれから数十年はアメリカが上位にあることが続く、平均寿命は現在アメリカが5年長い、市民権や参政権が中国では侵されているなど、アメリカに住む方がはるかに幸せである。また、中国をはじめとする後進国が発展することはアメリカにとって利点が多い。アメリカの輸出が増え、それにより雇用が増える。他の国が裕福で、安全で、民主的になれば、アメリカ人は安心して旅行することができ、また例えばアジアでより安く医療を受けることもできる。このような記事がでるのは、アメリカ人の間に中国の台頭に対する恐れがあるということだろうが、この記事の指摘は同じ気持ちでいる日本人としても納得できる。 When China surpassed Japan in GDP, many Japanese seemed to be disappointed, though it had been predicted. Now it is expected that China will replace US as the world top economy at least in 2017. A survey showed that 40 % of Americans think this will be negatve for them.An essay appeared in an American e-journal comments, "GDP refers only to the size of economy, the quality of life is far better in US than in China." It goes on "GDP per capita is far larger than that of China. Average life expectancy of American is five years longer than that of Chinese. In China civil and political rights are routinely abused." It also mentioned that on the contorary to many Americans' worry they will benefit from emergying countries such as China. They will import more and create more jobs in US. Their growth means that there are more places for Americans to travel in security and comfort, and more places to work. Americans can get healthcare in those countries. This article suggests that many Americans have fear about the rapid development of China. What this essay points out are convincing and useful for us, Japanese who have the same fear.

危険な国 Which country is the biggest threat ?
昨年暮れのギャラップの国際調査によると、世界に最も脅威を与える国はアメリカで、24％の人がそう答えている。次がパキスタンで6％、3番目が中国で5％である。4番目がアフガニスタン、イラン、イスラエル、北朝鮮の4％で、日本はこれに次いでイラン、インドとともに4％である。この後がシリアの3％で、ロシアが2％である。日本がこんなに危険な国と思われているとは驚きだった。平和憲法の下、実戦的な軍隊も、軍需産業もない弱い国だと思われていると思っていたが、イラク並みで、北朝鮮にも近い危険な国なのだろうか。中国、韓国の人の回答が集中したのかも知れない。実際パキスタンが上位にあるのは敵対国インドの人の投票のためかという解説があった。日本について他のアジアの国でもそう思っているのか、またヨーロッパやアメリカではどうなのか聞いてみたくなった。Gallup surveyed the public's opinion from 61 countries last December about "which country is the biggest thread ? " 24% of the respondents named United States, followed by Pakistan with 6% and China with 5%. Afganistan, Iran, Isreal and North Korea rank the fourth with 4%. Japan, Iran and India were after them with 3%, followed by Syria with 3% and Russia with 2%. I thought that Japan could be categorized into safe countries, because we have only impractical army and no substantial ammunition industry under the peaceful constitution. So it is surprising to me that Japan is thought to be as dangerous country as Iraq and close to North Korea in this context. I wonder if this is due to the preferential responses of Korean and Chinese. Actually this seemed to happen for Pakistan from the vote by rival Indian respondents. I would like to hear the response from people in other Asian countries, US and Europe.

新年の願い Wish for new year
昨年は経済が持ち直して、今年も明るい見通しだったのに、安部首相の靖国参詣であやしくなった。今のところ中国でのデモや日本品排斥の動きは出ていないようだがまだ安心できない。安倍さんの靖国参詣についてのテレビの報道では、街角でインタビューした日本人のほとんどが訪問の是非よりは中国、韓国との関係を心配していた。これらの国が言うように、これは安倍さんが先の戦争を肯定しているのだというのには、日本人の誰もが同調できないだろう。政治家の靖国訪問反対の理由としてよく言われる戦犯が合祀されているためというのは、死んだ人はみな仏になるという日本人の心情を説明するしかないと思う。他国に遠慮するよりは、明らかな誤解による以上はそれぞれの国の文化を理解してもらうように努力するのが正当な行為だと思われる。この他に指摘されているのは靖国の戦争賛美の姿勢だ。事実だとすれば、これは一般日本人の考えとあまりにも異なる。民間の組織といえども、国営のイメージが残る神社の姿勢としては見逃せないことだ。しかしこれを改めさせることができれば、首相や国会議員の参詣の問題は解決するのだろうか。 Economy got better in 2013, and we were expecting good new year. But prime minister Abe's visit to Yasukuni shrine in last December cast dark cloud over the economy of 2014. Fortunately there are no demonstrations or nonpurchase movements of Japanese products in China so far. I saw on TV that many Japanese interviewed on street responded that they were concerned about the reaction in China and Korea. The official comments made so far by those countries were that Mr. Abe tried to defend the World War II by visiting Yasukuni. But we hardly believe that he is in favor of the war. Their main accusation is that war criminals are enshrined with other war dead in Yasukuni and Mr.Abe's prayer is for those criminals, too. But this is obviously their misunderstanding. We traditionally think that everybody becomes Buddha after his or her death and make no distinguish between the good and bad. We should make more effort to explain our cultural background. I think that each country has its own culture to be respected.Another reason often pointed out is Yasukuni's war-admiring tendency that is so different from what most Japanese have. Yasukuni is a private shrine, but it used to be state-run. The government (and public opinion) could pressure it to take politically neutral stance. I hope that our prime minister can visit any shrine or temple without offending other countries.
