白鵬 への批判 Sumo wrestler Hakuho
横綱審議会で白鵬の態度が良くないと意見がでたそうである。具体的には勝負が決まった後、土俵下で駄目押し的に相手の背中を押したことや、行司からの賞金の受け取り方が乱暴だということだった。審議会は行儀正しい相撲の伝統を守るのが使命の一つと思われるので、そうした意見が出たのだと思う。批判の前者は福岡場所での勢との勝負を指していると思うが、この勝負を見ていた一フアンとしては、ファイトが溢れたという感じを受けた。白鵬もとっさに反省したと見えて、勢が起き上がるのに手を貸していた。また賞金の受け取り方については勝負の余韻を残しているようで私には気にならない。テレビ放送では負けて花道を引き上げる力士の顔を映しているが、悔しさや落胆している表情を示しており、高見盛などはそれで人気が出た。力士の豊な表情や態度をみると、八百長でなく勝負にかけているという気持ちが伝わって感激する。多くの人が仕事にかける気持ちと共通するところがあり、そこがスポーツの人気の源の一つではないかと感じる。 It is reported that at the meeting of the sumo advisory committee held after Fukuoka tournament there were comments on Hokuho(winner of the tournament)'s manners in and around sumo ring such as unnecessary thrust after the end of bout and rough manner of taking prize money from referee. It is understandable that the committee expresses such comments, because it is one of the important works of the committee to watch traditional manners of sumo. The former comment might indicate the bout of Hakuho with Ikioi in which Hakuho thrusted Ikioi's back after they fell out of the ring. Hakuho apparently regreted his deed and tried to help Ikioi get up. Watching this bout, I got an impression that Hakuho's fighting spirit spilt over. Regarding his manner of receiving the prize, he is likely still excited immidiately after the fight. TV often shows wrestlers's expressions while they are withdrawing from the ring after their bout, some are so disapointed and frustrated when losing their match. Ex-wrestler Takamisakari was very popular for his lively expression of being disappointed after losing match and being overjoyed when he won. Their expressions imply their sincerity toward sumo and shows there is no match-fixing as some bouts used to be suspected. Watching their attitude and expression I realize that wrestlers and us have something in common in career life.

集団的自衛権承認に対する抗議自殺 Self immolation against collective self-defence
集団的自衛権の閣議決定に抗議して日本人男性が焼身自殺する事件があったと外国のニュースが報じていた。しかもこれは5月に続いて2件目だということである。日本でも報じられたのかもしれないが私は知らなかったので、少なくとも大きな事件の扱いではなかったと思われる。単発的な事件で、政治的な背景がないということで大きく取り上げられなかったのか、あるいは意図的に小さく扱うとしたのか分からないが、外国でこのニュースを聞けば日本では大きな抗議運動が行われていると思うに違いない。中国や韓国が反発しているともこのニュースでは伝えているが、日本もこれで普通の近代国並みになるという意見も紹介している。国際外交での一番の武器は軍事力だというから、他の先進国と同等な外交を行うとすれば、軍事活動の強化もやむ得ないことかもしれない。ましてや国連の安全保障常任理事国入りを目指すならば必要なことだろうと思う。戦争の危険は避けたいし、近代国家としての役割をはたして世界には認められたいしというのは現状では矛盾した願望ということだろうか。 Foreign media reported that a Japanese man killed himself in an apparent protest against the cabinet's decision on the approval of collective self-defence. I am surprised to know that this is the second similar incident since May, because such incidents were new to me. Japanese media may not have regarded them as big news or downplayed for any reasons. But foreign readers must have got different image of what are happening in Japan. The article reports angers from China and Korea. But it also introduces a comment that it allows Japan to engage in normal activities of a modern nation.Considering that millitary power is a major factor in determining nation's diplomatic power and Japan now tries to be a permanent member of UN security council, we need more flexibility in military activity including the right for collective self-defence. Is it contradictory in today's world if we wish no arms while living up to the responsibility of a leading nation?

地下鉄での携帯電話 Cellphone in subway
地下鉄の優先席に座っていた年配の外国人が突然大声で何か言ったので、びっくりした。よく聞いていると、そばに立っている日本人の若い男性に、優先席の近くで携帯を使うのを止めなさい、ここに書いてあると日本語と英語で言っていた。男性は直ぐには止めずに、何度か言われて、やっと反対側の優先席の近くに行ってまだ携帯を使っていたが、最終的には離れて行ったようだ。この外国人は、無線は目に見えないが有害なのだ、いらいらする、携帯ばかりやって馬鹿者だと、これも日本語と英語で言いながら、次の車の優先席にも携帯を使うのを止めなさいと叫んでいた。確かに優先席の近くでは携帯の電源を切るようにアナウンスがあるが、私も真剣には聞いていなかった。それから気を付けてみると、優先席近くでスマートフォンを使っている人が沢山いる。誰も注意しないが、外国人から見れば、日本人は公衆道徳を守らない人種だと映っているのかもしれない。 In subway an elderly foreign man sitting on a priority seat suprised us by shouting " Stop using a cellphone, you don't see the warning written here ?" in both Japanese and English. I noticed that he said it to a young man standing close to his seat. But he didn't stop it immediately. After the foreigner repeated it, the young man moved to the opposite side of the car, still close to another priority seat. Finally he left there. The foreigner was still murmuring "Electric wave is invisible. But it is harmful. I am irritated". Then he opened the door to the next car and shouted again "Stop using a cellphone". I know there are announcements to nortify us to switch off our cellphone near priority seat. But I haven't taken it seriously. Since then closely watching in subway, I found many people using smartphones near priority seat. But nobody warn them. I am afraid that foreigners may think Japanese are lack in public moral.
