生分解性プラスチックの真実 Biodegradable plastics is not truly biodegradable

使い捨てプラスチック製品による海洋汚染が大きな環境問題となっており、使用の自粛や代替品の開発が行なわれている。プラスチックが問題なのは自然環境中で分解しないことで、他のごみと一緒に埋葬しても何百年何千年も残ってしまう。この問題の解決のために、代替品として微生物により分解する生分解性プラスチックの開発が以前から行われており、既に製品が市販されている。しかし未だに代替品が既存のプラスチックと代わることができないのはその製造コストが原因なのかと想像していたら、生分解性と称しながら実は分解しないことにあるらしい。アメリカで発表された研究によると、3種類の生分解性ポリ袋（化学性、植物性および両者の混合）と比較のために通常のポリエチレン袋を土壌中、海洋中、光と空気への露出、および研究室に放置の4つの方法で調べた結果、どの試料もこれらの環境で完全には分解しなかった。しかし海洋中で植物性のポリ袋が3ケ月で無くなったというのは水溶性にはなったということだろうか。また空気にさらしておいた場合にだけ、すべてのポリ袋が９ケ月以上で分解が見られるが、通常のポリエチレンでも18ケ月で壊れて細片になるという。しかしこれらが生物に無害になるにはさらに長い期間かかり、完全に分解したと言える状態になる期間まではこの研究では確認していないようだ。以上の研究により現在生分解性プラスチックと称しているのは真に環境に無害な代替品ではないことが明らかになった。従って、環境中で分解して無害になる本当の意味での生分解プラスチックの開発が待たれている。Wasted plastic bags buried in landfill and flowed into ocean cause serious environmental problems. Because chemically synthesized plastics cannot be degraded in the natural environment. The government tries to restrict the use of plastic bag. The industries have been eager to develop biodegradable plastic for alternative and some products are available in the market. Nevertheless these alternatives can not replace existing plastics yet. For this reason I simply thought that alternative products were not cost-competitive. Research recently published in the US journal found that commercially　available biodegradable plastics is not really biodegradable. They tested four types of plastic bags; plastic made in part from oyster shell, oxo-biodegradable plastic, plastic made from plant products and as comparison polyethylene bag. They were placed in four environments; buried in garden soil, submerged in the ocean water, left exposed to sunlight and air, and sealed in a dark container in a laboratory. After three years none of the bags broke down completely in all the environments. All the bags broke down consistently only when exposed to open air for more than nine months, whereas polyethylene plastic disintegrated into pieces before 18 months had passed. But it is unclear in this research if these biodegradable bags disintegrate completely and eventually become harmless. This research suggested that commercially available biodegradable plastic is not really biodegradable.
