***************************** Recently, I had the opportunity to stay at a business hotel. (No, it wasn’t due to COVID-19 quarantine.) One thing I always struggle with when staying at a hotel is how to handle the air conditioning while sleeping. In small business hotel rooms, the position of the air conditioner’s vent and how it’s set can have a big impact on comfort. The room I stayed in this time was old, and the air conditioner was a floor-standing unit installed in the room.
When I searched online, I found various opinions such as:
Using a timer to turn it on around bedtime and again about an hour before waking up.
Heating the room before going to bed, then turning the air conditioner off during sleep.
Here is an interesting article I came across: Best way to use heating when sleeping! Tips from an air conditioner manufacturer to improve winter sleep quality
After reading this, I was surprised to realize that I had been setting the temperature too high all along!
The reason seemed to be that I had been setting the air conditioner to around 25°C even during winter. Apparently, that’s too warm for winter — it’s better to keep it at 20°C or lower.
That night, I decided to heat the room before going to bed, then turn the air conditioner off while sleeping. I used only one blanket and wore a thin hotel robe, but I didn’t feel cold and was able to sleep comfortably. I guess hotels and apartment buildings retain heat differently than a detached house like mine, where my bedroom on the first floor can get freezing cold by dawn without my DeLonghi heater. Still, I think I’ll try to keep the heating a bit lower at home from now on, too.
