.The town was originally named Coventry, as many early settlers came from that town in Connecticut. It was renamed Benton after "Old Bullion," Thomas Hart Benton , the crusty Missouri senator who pushed for settlement of the western frontier in the early 1800s.
Benton is the location of Mount Moosilauke , (4,802 feet) well-known to hikers of the Appalachian Trail. Except for the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge , most services for Mount Moosilauke are located in the nearby town of Warren .
Dining and lodging are available in the village of Woodsville , about 10 miles to the northwest.
