  • Daily Spotlight: Fed Steady Ahead of Midterms

As expected, the Federal Reserve (Fed) wrapped up its meeting on Wednesday and left its Fed Funds target unchanged at 3.75%-4.00%. We think this makes sense ahead of the midterm elections next week. But in the context of the larger economy and the inflation and interest-rate environments, we think the range is a bit too low and expect the Fed will hike the rate by 25 basis points at its December meeting. Economic conditions have evolved since Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh took over the central bank helm in May. The war in Iran has sent oil prices skyrocketing, and general inflation has followed higher. Meanwhile, the other element of the Fed's dual mandate -- the unemployment rate -- has remained low as nonfarm payrolls have steadied and layoff announcements have been scarce. After the election ramifications die down, and with the conflict in the Middle East hopefully moving toward a resolution, we think the Fed may be able to look past $100-per-barrel oil and keep short-term rates steady in 2027. Chairman Walsh certainly has his own ideas about how the central bank should be run. He has set up five task forces to review standard Fed procedures in the areas of Communications, Balance Sheet Policy, Data, Productivity, and Inflation. At his press conference on Wednesday, he announced that the Fed would continue to meet eight times per year, but would spend at least one of its meetings discussing broad monetary policy strategy, without taking a vote on the Fed Funds rate or issuing a policy statement. His actions to date haven't really changed the appearance of transparency at the Fed. The vote to keep rates steady was 10-2 and after the decision was announced, the stock and bond markets were stable.
