Quick Read

  • XRP gained 9.9% since late 2021 while Ethereum dropped 50.7%, making XRP the stronger five-year performer despite trading far below its record high.

  • Ethereum ETFs bled $432 million in one week across 11 straight days of outflows, while XRP ETFs posted modest inflows over the same period.

  • Ethereum has a better chance of climbing back to its 2025 peak by 2031, but XRP presents greater potential for gains.

XRP(CRYPTO: XRP) and Ethereum(CRYPTO: ETH) have both faced challenges recently, losing around 16% of their value over the past month. Currently, both cryptocurrencies are trading far below their previous highs from 2025. So, in the XRP vs. Ethereum debate, which is the smarter investment for the next five years?

XRP is priced at $1.25 after a 16.5% decline in the last 30 days, leaving it 65.8% below its record high of $3.65 from July 17, 2025. In comparison, Ethereum trades at $2,267 after a 15.5% drop, which is 54.2% below its record of $4,946, reached on August 24, 2025.

The coin on the left has the Ethereum logo in gold and the word 'ethereum' embossed below it. The coin on the right features a gold outline of a world map made of dots, the XRP logo, and the word 'ripple' at the bottom. Both coins cast clear reflections below them. Investors often look back at those peaks because a return to those levels would mean a potential price increase of 2.92 times for XRP and 2.18 times for Ethereum. The key question is which cryptocurrency stands a better chance of making a comeback by 2031.

XRP Is Worth More Than in 2021 Despite a Lower Price

Market capitalization, or market cap, represents a cryptocurrency's price multiplied by the total number of coins in circulation, providing a clearer picture for comparison. Currently, XRP ranks fifth with a market cap of about $79.2 billion, while Ethereum stands second at approximately $276.9 billion.

Analyzing XRP's 2021 figures shows how supply changes can affect value. On November 8, 2021, XRP closed at $1.29 with a market cap of about $60.9 billion. Now, XRP's price is lower, but its market cap is higher because more coins have entered circulation.

Therefore, if XRP aims to reach $3.65 again by 2031, it may require significantly more investment than it did in July 2025 because of increased supply.

Conversely, Ethereum's situation suggests a different trend. On November 2, 2021, it closed at $4,597 with a market cap of about $543 billion. Since then, Ethereum's price and market cap have mostly fallen in tandem, suggesting a relatively stable number of coins in circulation.

Over five years, XRP has the advantage. From November 1, 2021, XRP has increased by 9.9%, whereas Ethereum has dropped by 50.7%. This means that those who bought XRP in late 2021 have gained slightly, while Ethereum investors have seen their investment halved.

Ethereum ETFs Are Selling While XRP ETFs Keep Buying

Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that hold cryptocurrencies directly allow investors to own these coins through conventional brokerage accounts. As of November 1, Ethereum ETFs hold around $13.2 billion but have experienced 11 straight days of outflows, with $432 million pulled during the week ending October 30.

These outflows require the funds to sell Ethereum to accommodate shareholder redemptions, making them consistent sellers in the market. Meanwhile, Ethereum has fallen by 3.8% over the past week, and any substantial rebound will need to reverse these outflows over the coming months.

Meanwhile, XRP ETF funds are trending positively, with $1.42 billion in holdings and a modest inflow of $4.3 million last week. While this inflow is small compared to XRP's $79.2 billion market cap, it is notable in a week when Ethereum's funds lost hundreds of millions.

Ripple Won a Trust Bank Charter, but XRP Still Fell

Ripple recently received final authorization from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the federal regulator for national banks, for Ripple National Trust Bank, which was announced on October 26. This charter introduces federal oversight for the reserves behind Ripple's dollar-pegged stablecoin (RLUSD) and the custody of client assets.

Despite this positive development for Ripple, XRP's price fell 4.2% over the past week, and the news did not boost it.

XRP vs. Ethereum: Which Has the Better Outlook for the Next Five Years?

Ethereum operates the largest smart contract network, powering applications like lending platforms and stablecoins. Its slow supply growth limits dilution. However, it needs the current trend of ETF outflows to reverse and consistently close above its 50-day average of $2,526 (an 11.4% increase) and its one-year high of $3,905 (a 72.3% rise). If these outflows continue through December, Ethereum might revisit its June 25 low of $1,566 (a 30.9% decrease).

For XRP, Ripple's banking push could stimulate demand for the token. However, the growing supply makes a return to $3.65 more challenging. XRP needs to surpass its 50-day average of $1.39 (an 11.2% increase) and its recent peak of $1.57 (a 25.6% increase). A drop below $1.25 could send it back down to its low of $0.99 from August (a 20.8% decline).

In summary, while Ethereum has a better chance of climbing back to its peak by 2031, XRP presents greater potential for gains.
