The 10-year Treasury yield closed at 5.05% on the Treasury's par curve on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. That was a 6-basis-point jump from 4.99% the day before and its first close above 5% since 5.13% on October 21.
The trigger was the Federal Reserve. It held its target range at 3.75% to 4% in a 10-2 vote, but the two dissenters wanted a hike, and the statement upgraded its view of growth.
Long bonds fell. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF( NASDAQ:TLT ), which holds $47.44 billion in assets, fell 0.78% to $80.99, then traded at $81.19 after hours.
The move was modest in context. The yield remains well below its 5.31% close on October 5, and overnight it slid slightly below 5%, reaching 4.999% at 1:42 a.m. ET on October 29.
A Hawkish Hold With Two Dissents
Governor Lisa D. Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth M. Hammack dissented in favor of a 25-basis-point hike. The statement said "Economic activity is expanding at a strong pace," upgraded from a solid pace in September, when the Fed raised rates by 25 basis points. It also said, "Inflation remains elevated."
Only the hold is an actual policy decision. A December hike is still just market pricing, although one widely used futures gauge put its odds at 86.0%, up from 78.3% a day earlier.

The 30-year rose to 5.37% from 5.30% while the 2-year slid to 4.67% from 4.70%. The 2-year/10-year gap extended to 38 basis points from 29 basis points.
That is bear steepening, meaning long yields rise faster than short ones. Investors want more to hold long bonds because they expect stronger growth and stickier inflation, while nobody is pricing in rate cuts.
Inflation data supports that view. Core PCE, the Fed's preferred gauge, ran at 3.01% year over year in August, and energy drove headline PCE to 3.42%.
TLT has only Treasuries maturing in 20 years or more, so it carries the most price sensitivity among mainstream Treasury funds. It is up 3.43% over the past month but down 3.83% year to date.
Bond Bulls Versus Inflation Hawks
Ariel Investments Vice Chairman Charlie Bobrinskoy said on October 27 that "for the first time in two decades, we have decent expected returns in the bond market." The 10-year real yield of 2.67% supports him.
DoubleLine Capital CEO Jeffrey Gundlach said after the decision that the Fed should be raising rates, that headline inflation is heading toward a 4 handle and that a December hike is likely. Nuveen's Anders Persson agreed: "Ultimately, if we see strong growth, which (Fed Chair Kevin) Warsh is expecting, we're going to see more inflation."
The hawks hold the stronger near-term case, and borrowers already feel it, with a daily 30-year mortgage index rising to 7.35% from 7.33%.
What the Fed Decision Means for TLT
The move was small, but it was driven by a Fed tending toward rate increases and a market asking for more inflation protection, and long bonds suffer most in that setting.
A shorter-duration comparison is the iShares 1-3 Year Treasury Bond ETF( NASDAQ:SHY ). With the 2-year at 4.67%, the fund gives up little income while avoiding most of the price risk if long yields keep climbing.
Investors face another test at 8:30 a.m. ET on October 29, ET on October 29, when third-quarter GDP and September PCE inflation are released. Hot readings would keep pressure on the long end.
Watch for a 10-year close above 5.13%, which would confirm a full reversal and likely push TLT toward its 52-week low of $76.43. A close below 4.96% before the December 9 meeting would undercut this outlook.
