Let's examine the factors shaping HOG's investment outlook.
HOG's North American Recovery Supports Growth
Harley-Davidson's North American retail sales increased 9% year over year in the third quarter of 2026, marking the fourth consecutive quarter of growth. New launches, including Super Glide and Deadwood, exceeded management expectations, while global dealer inventory declined 26%. Current model-year motorcycles accounted for 91% of North American inventory.
The Back to the Bricks strategy is also gaining traction, with U.S. Cruiser market share reaching 66%, up 14 percentage points year over year. Upcoming launches, including Sprint 440 and Sportster 883, are expected to broaden the product portfolio. Reflecting stronger retail execution, management raised its 2026 global retail and wholesale shipment guidance to 135,500-139,000 units from 133,500-138,500 units.
HOG's Cost Savings and HDFS Model Support Recovery
Harley-Davidson's restructuring initiatives remain central to its earnings recovery. Management targets $150 million in fixed-cost savings and at least $350 million of HDMC adjusted EBITDA in 2027. Third-quarter operating expenses declined 1% year over year to $227 million despite $14 million in restructuring costs. Adjusted EBITDA margin improved 102 basis points to 9.7%.
HDFS' transition toward a capital-light model, supported by its KKR and PIMCO partnerships, could improve capital efficiency. Third-quarter retail loan originations increased 4% to $786 million, while the annualized managed retail credit-loss ratio improved to 3% from 3.2%. Management raised its 2026 HDFS operating income guidance to $60-$70 million from $55-$70 million.
HOG's Strong Liquidity Supports Capital Returns
Harley-Davidson's consolidated cash and equivalents totaled $2.1 billion as of Sept. 30, 2026, compared with $1.8 billion a year earlier. HDMC held approximately $1.4 billion in cash against $297 million of debt, providing financial flexibility.
The company returned $110 million to shareholders in the third quarter through $91 million in share repurchases and $19 million in dividends. Management also reduced its 2026 capital investment guidance to $140-$165 million from $175-$200 million.
HOG's Shipment Weakness and Tariff Costs Weigh on Growth
Despite improving retail trends, HDMC's global motorcycle shipments declined 8% year over year to 33,616 units in the third quarter, while revenues fell 10% to $964 million. Lower wholesale volumes could constrain manufacturing utilization and near-term revenue growth.
International demand also remains weak, with retail sales declining 5% in Europe, the Middle East and Africa and 7% in Latin America. Asia-Pacific sales increased just 1%.
Tariff expenses add further pressure. Management raised its 2026 gross tariff cost estimate to $105-$120 million from $75-$90 million. Gross tariff costs reached approximately $94 million in the first nine months compared with $45 million a year earlier. Higher raw material prices and pricing incentives also reduced third-quarter gross profit by a combined $19 million.
HDFS Earnings Reset and LiveWire Losses Raise Concerns
HDFS' capital-light transition has substantially reduced its historical revenue and earnings base. Third-quarter revenues declined 58% year over year to $111 million, while operating income fell to $11 million from $439 million. Operating margin declined to 9.7% from 168%, partly reflecting the absence of a substantial prior-year credit-loss allowance release. Although management raised its 2026 operating income guidance to $60-$70 million, the segment's recurring earnings contribution remains structurally different.
Meanwhile, LiveWire continues to generate losses despite a 41% increase in third-quarter revenues. Its operating losses were approximately $18 million, while losses totaled $53 million in the first nine months of 2026. LiveWire also withdrew its full-year guidance after identifying substantial doubt about its ability to continue as a going concern. Although HOG does not intend to fund its operating losses, the restructuring and long-term viability of the business remain uncertain.
Harley-Davidson's stronger North American sales, cost savings and solid liquidity support its recovery, but shipment weakness, tariff pressures and LiveWire losses continue to cloud its earnings outlook. With profitability yet to show sustained improvement, investors may prefer to wait, keeping the stock neutral.
