Lazard Inc.'s LAZ stock has lost 14.1% over the past six months against the industry's growth of 5.5%. The underperformance raises questions about whether the recent pullback presents an attractive entry point or if investors should wait for greater clarity on the company's growth outlook.
Compared with its peers in the financial services space, LAZ's performance has been weaker. Virtu Financial, Inc.VIRT shares have gained 55.4%, while Jefferies Financial Group Inc.JEF stock has risen 16.5% over the same period.

The uncertain macroeconomic environment remains a key concern for Lazard. Geopolitical tensions, interest-rate uncertainty and elevated financing costs could weigh on transaction activity and delay clients' strategic decisions. Meanwhile, volatility in the capital markets and uneven merger and acquisition (M&A) activity may limit opportunities across the company's advisory business. These conditions could weigh on deal activity and advisory revenues, making it harder for Lazard to fully benefit from the M&A recovery.
As a result, the Zacks Consensus Estimate for Lazard's 2026 and 2027 earnings has been revised downward over the past 60 days. The consensus estimate implies a 10.6% year-over-year decline in 2026 and an 83.6% year-over-year increase in 2027.

Can Lazard reverse its recent underperformance, or is the stock poised for further weakness? Let us find out.
Why Are Investors Cautious on LAZ Shares?
Earnings Miss in Second-Quarter 2026:The company reported second-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of 12 cents per share, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 42 cents. The figure also declined sharply from 52 cents in the year-ago quarter. The weak results were primarily due to lower Financial Advisory revenues and higher operating expenses. Increased compensation and non-compensation costs further pressured profitability, driving the adjusted operating margin down to 8.3% from 14.1% in the prior-year quarter. The earnings weakness could make investors more cautious about its near-term prospects and limit upside in the stock.
Heavy Reliance on Financial Advisory: LAZ's growth remains closely tied to a recovery in deal activity, with Financial Advisory contributing 55.6% of total operating revenues as of June 30, 2026. In the last few years, the segment has faced pressure from weak M&A activity and volatile capital markets, with revenues declining 7.1% in 2022 and 17.9% in 2023. The weakness continued in the first half of 2026, as adjusted segment net revenues declined 7% year over year. Although management expects activity to improve in the second half, supported by higher deal clearances and a stronger pipeline, subdued private-equity M&A activity and valuation gaps continue to delay portfolio-company exits. These challenges could slow the recovery in Financial Advisory and are expected to pressure its top-line growth.
Restructuring Costs Weigh on Near-Term Profitability:Although Lazard continues to implement restructuring and growth initiatives under its Lazard 2030 plan, investors remain concerned about elevated costs. The company continues to incur higher compensation and operating expenses, with non-compensation expenses fluctuating over the years, declining in 2020, 2022 and 2024 but increasing in 2021, 2023 and 2025. The trend continued in the first half of 2026, with adjusted non-compensation expenses rising 5% year over year. While disciplined hiring, productivity improvements and greater use of artificial intelligence (AI) are expected to improve operating leverage, the benefits may take time to materialize, leaving elevated costs to pressure earnings in the near term.
Limited Liquidity to Constrain Capital Returns: The company's liquidity profile remains a concern. As of June 30, 2026, the company had cash of $1.10 billion compared with senior debt of $1.69 billion.
The company's capital distribution strategy also warrants caution. LAZ raised its quarterly common dividend by 6% in July 2022 and has kept the payout unchanged since then, resulting in a five-year annualized dividend growth rate of 1.2%. Further, its current dividend yield stands at 4.6%. Meanwhile, the dividend yields of its peers, Virtu Financial and Jefferies Financial, stand at 1.4% and 3.0%, respectively.

Apart from dividends, the company also has a share repurchase plan. In July 2026, the board authorized an additional $200 million in share repurchases through Dec. 31, 2028, bringing the total authorization to approximately $257 million. Although capital returns support shareholders, continued distributions amid limited liquidity could constrain Lazard's financial flexibility and weigh on its ability to fund growth initiatives.
Lazard's Long-Term Story Remains Intact
Despite the above-mentioned challenges, the company's long-term growth prospects remain encouraging, supported by its diversified business model and strong global franchise. Its Asset Management business continues to expand, providing a stable source of recurring revenue and offsetting weaker Financial Advisory performance in the first half of 2026. Over the five years ended 2025, adjusted revenues grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.2%, with momentum sustained in the first half of 2026. Looking ahead, management remains focused on its Lazard 2030 strategy, which targets doubling revenues and delivering an average annual shareholder return of 10-15% through 2030.
The growing assets under management (AUM) base further strengthens Lazard's revenue profile. Its AUM increased at a 2.8% CAGR during 2016-2025, while positive net flows reached $7.4 billion in the first half of 2026, marking the company's strongest first-half inflow performance in nearly 20 years. Continued demand across equities, fixed income and private markets should support further AUM growth and provide greater stability to revenues.
The company is also expanding its private-market capabilities through strategic partnerships, with the planned Campbell Lutyens acquisition expected to strengthen its private capital advisory platform and be earnings accretive in 2027. If the company successfully executes its strategic initiatives and benefits from an improved operating environment, Lazard could strengthen its earnings trajectory and regain investor confidence.
LAZ's Valuation Analysis
In terms of valuation, the company's 12-month trailing price-to-book (P/B) ratio of 5.3X is above the industry's 3.0X. This indicates that its shares are expensive.

How to Approach LAZ Stock Now
Lazard's long-term prospects remain supported by its strong global franchise, growing Asset Management business and expanding private-market capabilities. Its rising AUM, strategic initiatives and potential recovery in deal activity provide avenues for growth.
However, near-term concerns remain significant. Weak second-quarter earnings, declining Financial Advisory revenues, elevated costs and limited liquidity could continue to pressure profitability. Downward earnings revisions and the stock's current valuation also leave limited room for disappointment.
Overall, Lazard's long-term strategy has merit, but the benefits may take time to materialize. With the near-term earnings outlook still uncertain, the stock could remain under pressure until there is clearer evidence of a sustained recovery.
Given these challenges, investors may consider reducing or exiting their positions in LAZ for now. The stock currently carries a Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell).
