Lithia Motors (LAD) Stock Sinks As Q3 Results Expose Rising Interest Costs

Trade LAD on Coinbase

Lithia Motors stock just dropped 10% today, yet the fresh Q3 2026 release shows a very different story. The auto retailer delivered about US$9.9b in revenue and basic earnings per share of US$13.23, alongside record income from its in house Driveway Finance Corporation. Traders focused on the headline price hit. Long term investors will likely zero in on a different angle: the growing weight of interest costs on a balance sheet that already carries higher leverage and now has to support a larger, finance heavy ecosystem.

Like the scale of Lithia Motors' earnings but uneasy about the rising leverage and financing exposure on that balance sheet? Scan the list of solid balance sheet and fundamentals stocks (25 results) to compare LAD against businesses that pair lending activity with sturdier debt profiles.

Evaluating Lithia Motors' Execution-Led Bull Case

Bulls argue Lithia Motors can keep lifting earnings power by tightening costs while scaling its ecosystem around service and finance.

"The main thing that has to go right is continued execution on cost reduction, Pinewood.AI rollout and store reorganization so that SG&A efficiency improves while used vehicle and aftersales volumes hold up."

Q3 results partially hit that bar. Same store SG&A in North America held at 65.7% of gross profit, which supports the efficiency angle but still sits above the sub 60% long term target. Used vehicle gross profit per unit and aftersales both advanced, backing the volume and mix side of the claim. Pinewood.AI remains early, with most of the future SG&A benefit still to be proved in North America.

Lithia Motors Bear Case: Pressure Points Still Visible

Bears frame Lithia Motors as racing the clock on cost and mix upgrades while legacy dealerships lose steam.

"Even as aftersales contributes over 40% of total gross profit with margins near 59% and broad based growth in customer pay and warranty work, the ongoing decline in same store revenues and total gross profit in Q1 and Q2 2026 signals that strength in fixed operations may not fully offset weaker vehicle sales, which could cap future revenue growth and constrain net margin improvement."

Q3 same store revenue fell 1.4%, and new vehicle revenues declined 2.6% on fewer units. Aftersales and used GPUs helped earnings; however, adjusted SG&A stayed elevated at 68.5% of gross profit. That mix shift softens the blow but does not fully disprove the worry that weaker dealership throughput and high overhead still limit margin headroom.

Hunt For Quiet Fundamental Shifts

Lithia Motors recently showed how earnings results and share prices can move differently on the same day. The real opportunity is studying stocks that could be undervalued before changing fundamentals are fully recognized.

  • Company 1 - 22% below our estimate - ties AI infrastructure, productivity software and developer tools into a single paid workflow embedded in large enterprise processes.

  • Company 2 - 38% below our estimate - converts a growing advisory pipeline and senior hiring into higher value, complex fee mandates across capital and private markets.

  • Company 3 - 31% below our estimate - tightens operations and reshapes its portfolio so more aftermarket and nuclear work contributes to a higher margin business mix.
