Ariel Investments , an investment management company, released its "Ariel Fund" Q3 2026 investor letter. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here . The strategy underperformed its small- and mid-cap value benchmarks in the third quarter of 2026 as higher interest rates, inflationary pressures, and uneven market performance weighed on smaller companies. The Fund's Investor Class declined 4.45%, slightly underperforming the Russell 2500 Value Index, which fell 4.36%, while outperforming the Russell 2000 Value Index's 4.91% decline. Strong earnings, improved guidance, and accelerating demand across end markets supported a leading barcode-technology business, while improving biopharmaceutical research demand and operational efficiencies benefited a laboratory-services holding. However, higher commodity and transportation costs pressured a lawn-and-garden products company, and weaker consumer demand, margin pressure, and liquidity concerns hurt a pool and spa-care business. Looking ahead, Ariel expects market volatility to continue amid uncertainty around inflation, monetary policy, and economic growth. The firm believes a disciplined, fundamental approach focused on durable franchises, strong balance sheets, and long-term earnings power can help investors identify companies whose market prices do not fully reflect their intrinsic value. Ariel Fund stated the following regarding The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company (NYSE:SMG) in its Q3 2026 investor letter:
"Market leader in the U.S. lawn and garden industry, Scotts Miracle Gro (NYSE:SMG), fell as higher commodity and transportation costs pressured margins and weighed on near-term profitability. Despite these headwinds, underlying operating trends remain solid with management reaffirming its broader outlook while continuing to execute its SMG 2.0 strategy. Investors remain focused on the company's efforts to improve profits, reduce debt and enhance capital allocation under new leadership. In our view, SMG's iconic brands, deep retail relationships and opportunities in organic products and digital channels position the company for stronger long-term performance."
