South Plains Financial (SPFI) Stock Price Dips After Solid Q3 Earnings

Trade SPFI on Coinbase

South Plains Financial just posted Q3 2026 earnings that looked solid on paper while the stock quietly slipped 2.1% on the day to about US$43. That disconnect is the story. The bank delivered roughly US$20.8 million in profit with earnings per share a touch above US$1 and return on assets at 1.53%, yet traders treated the release as an excuse to trim exposure.

Short term sentiment is leaning cautious. The fundamentals that actually drive a regional bank, including a net interest margin near 4% and an efficiency ratio just above 58%, point to a business still executing, not one in distress.

South Plains Financial: Testing The Growth Ambition

South Plains Financial markets a Texas-led expansion story that depends on steady loan growth and a protected margin.

"Analysts expect South Plains Financial to continue using Texas-focused organic growth, disciplined lending, and the Bank of Houston integration to grow loans in the mid-single digits while aiming to hold net interest margin near 4%."

Q3 loans grew at roughly 6.3% annualized, right in that mid single digit zone despite sizable paydowns, and management kept full year guidance there. Net interest margin held near 4% while letting higher cost funding roll off and nudging deposit costs slightly lower. This supports this part of the thesis for now.

South Plains Financial: Stress Testing Funding And Credit Risk

The bear view focuses on whether funding pressure and competition in Texas eventually crack the economics of this expansion.

"The cost of deposits moved higher by 11 basis points in Q2 2026 and management acknowledges strong competition for funding, so if deposit pricing pressure continues despite efforts to remix Bank of Houston funding, net interest margin around 4% could prove difficult to maintain and this would weigh on net interest income and overall earnings."

In Q3, deposit costs actually ticked down 1 basis point and net interest margin stayed near 4%, helped by runoff of more expensive funding. Credit remains contained with allowance at 1.38% and nonperforming loans at 0.40%, mostly from known Bank of Houston credits that are already under workout. This quarter does not yet show that funding or asset quality risk breaking the story.
