On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 22, 2026, TrustCo Bank(NASDAQ:TRST) announced that its third-quarter net income rose 6.5% year over year to $17.3 million. The bank's profitability and net interest margin, which measures the spread between interest earned on assets and interest paid to depositors, improved alongside core loan growth. It's expanding its loan book while repurchasing shares and raising its cash dividend.
Three key takeaways from management's comments illustrate how the bank is positioning itself for continued momentum.
1. Aggressive Share Repurchases and Dividend Growth Underpin Capital Allocation
TrustCo Bank reduced its outstanding common stock by 13.2% across its 2025 and 2026 repurchase programs to boost shareholder returns. It also increased its quarterly dividend to $0.40 per share, continuing over a century of cash payouts to investors.
TrustCo repurchased 13.2% of outstanding common stock under the 2025 and 2026 stock repurchase programs through the acquisition of over 1.5 million shares in 2026, following the purchase of 1 million shares in 2025, reinforcing a disciplined long-term capital allocation strategy.

2. Strict Underwriting Standards Support Seven Straight Quarters of Net Recoveries
The bank kept its credit risk under control by maintaining conservative lending guidelines across its portfolio. Even with nonperforming loans, which are loans with overdue payments, edging up slightly, net recoveries exceeded charge-offs for seven consecutive quarters.
Charge-offs for the quarter amounted to a net recovery of $30,000, which follows a net recovery of $88,000 in the second quarter and a total of $171,000 in recoveries over the past year. Overall, we have had 7 straight quarters of net recoveries.

3. First Mortgages and Home Equity Loans Drive Core Portfolio Growth
Average loans expanded by $238 million year over year as residential borrowing led portfolio growth. Demand for home equity loans, which allow homeowners to borrow against their property value, helped propel total lending higher.
The growth was centered in our residential loan portfolio with our first mortgage segment growing by $177.3 million or 4% and our home equity loans growing $50 million or 11.4% over last year.

Looking Ahead
Financial momentum is building across deposits, loans, and net income through core relationship banking. The bank relies on conservative underwriting, controlled expenses, and local market presence while watching interest rate movements and loan demand.
With all those factors coming together and trending favorably, we are optimistic about the company's ability to maintain positive momentum into 2027.
-- Robert J. McCormick, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer
By focusing on traditional regional banking, it avoids riskier lending pivots.
Our focus continues to be on traditional lending and conservative balance sheet management, which has continued to enable us to produce consistent high-quality recurring earnings.
