Investing.com -- Netflix Inc. is paying $200 million for broadcast rights to the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in the United States and Canada, Bloomberg reported Wednesday.
The streaming service previously announced it acquired rights to show matches in both countries for the 2027 and 2031 tournaments, but financial terms were not disclosed at that time.
The deal represents one of the largest media agreements on an annual basis for a women's sports property. The WNBA's 11-year $3.1 billion deal, which equals about $280 million per year, is considered the largest in women's sports.
For the 2023 Women's World Cup, FIFA sold tournament rights separately for the first time as interest in women's sports grew. FIFA's annual report for that year showed broadcast rights revenue of roughly $270 million, which included media deals for all markets.
The 2027 tournament will be held in Brazil. For comparison, Fox paid about $485 million for US broadcast rights to the 2026 Men's World Cup.
FIFA expects to double revenue for next year's Women's World Cup to about $1 billion, FIFA Chief Football Officer Jill Ellis said on an episode of The Deal in June.
In 2023, FIFA President Gianni Infantino asked broadcasters to pay a fair price for Women's World Cup media rights and criticized bids as being too low. Infantino threatened TV blackouts in European markets that year because broadcasters refused to pay more. The European Broadcasting Union finalized an agreement with FIFA weeks before the tournament began.
