Cannabis company to lay off 150 people as they close 4 Mass. dispensaries

A multi-state cannabis company that operates four dispensaries in Massachusetts will close all of its facilities, laying off more than 150 people in the state.

Ayr Wellness, which is based in Miami, Florida, will lay off 157 people in Massachusetts by Sept. 29, according to a Massachusetts Workers Adjustment Retraining Notice filed with the state on July 31.

The company has adult-use and medical retail locations in Boston's Back Bay neighborhood as well as Needham, Somerville and Watertown, according to its website . Some of the dispensaries are known as Sira Naturals, the business name which all of the company's Massachusetts licenses are listed under, according to documents filed with the state Cannabis Control Commission. It also has cultivation and manufacturing facilities in Milford.

CCC data shows that all Sira Naturals licenses were active as of July 17, the last date it was updated.

Ayr also operates in Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Nevada.

Last week, the company announced a restructuring deal with plans to sell off all assets and "wind-down the remainder" of its operations in all states. In addition to its dispensaries and cultivation facilities, Ayr produces its own cannabis products under the brand names Kynd, Haze, Later Days and Levia, according to its website.
