Following President Donald Trump’s post on Truth Social that he had “been speaking with Coca-Cola about using REAL Cane Sugar in Coke,” the company has made an announcement.
Come this fall, the iconic soda company will introduce a new formula in the United States using cane sugar.
“As part of its ongoing innovation agenda, this fall in the United States, the company plans to launch an offering made with U.S. cane sugar to expand its Trademark Coca-Cola product range,” the company wrote in its second-quarter report on July 22. “This addition is designed to complement the company’s strong core portfolio and offer more choices across occasions and preferences.”
Coca-Cola clarified to MassLive that cane sugar will not be a replacement for high-fructose corn syrup.
“Our other beverages will continue,” a spokesperson from Coca-Cola said. “The cane sugar product will be an addition to the Trademark Coke lineup.”
Regarding potential health impacts, the choice between sweetness is inconsequential, Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, a cardiologist and director of the Food is Medicine Institute at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, told NBC News .
“Both high-fructose corn syrup and cane sugar are about 50% fructose, 50% glucose, and have identical metabolic effects,” he told the media outlet.
This means that both sweetness can equally raise the risk of obesity, diabetes and high triglycerides and blood pressure, NBC reported. The sugars also provide the same number of calories.
