Iconic pet store chain Petco is downsizing its operations and eliminating dozens of stores nationwide as its year-to-year revenue is down.
The company recently announced plans to close 25 stores after releasing its second quarter earnings report in August.
Petco's $1.5 billion quarterly net sales decreased year over year by decreased by 2.3% — approximately $35 million — from 2024 to 2025, according to the report.
The report shows the company's outlook for the remainder of 2025 and highlights the closure of 25 stores but does not state where those locations are.
"The first half of this year established a solid foundation for our transformation as we continued to strengthen our economic model and improve retail operating fundamentals," said Joel Anderson, Petco's chief executive officer.
"As we look ahead to the remainder of this year, we will continue to execute on our objectives while also leaning into select targeted investments that we believe will help set the stage for a return to sustainable profitable growth," Anderson continued.
Petco, founded in 1965, currently operates approximately 1,500 stores across the U.S., Mexico and Puerto Rico.
According to its store locator page , Massachusetts is home to 39 Petco stores.
