FOXBOROUGH – The Patriots brought in several veteran offensive linemen this offseason hoping to improve their pass protection in 2025.
On Tuesday, one of those free-agent signings opted to leave the team.
The Patriots placed veteran offensive lineman Wes Schweitzer on the reserve/retired list. This move effectively ends Schweitzer's season. The 31-year-old did factor into the Patriots equation at guard and center – when present at OTAs. However, Schweitzer wasn't at minicamp this week.
A sixth-round pick in 2016, Schweitzer was a starting right guard and left guard for the Atlanta Falcons. He started 36 of 46 games played those first three seasons. In 2020, he started 13 of 16 games played for the Washington Commanders.
Schweitzer spent the last two seasons with the New York Jets, where he played in 10 games, making two starts.
This offseason, it looked like the veteran could be an option for the Patriots at left guard. That's the one position on the offensive line where the Patriots are having an open competition.
With Schweitzer opting to retire, the competition has been led by Cole Strange. Other players who could factor into the equation include Tyrese Robinson, Layden Robinson, and Jack Conley.
