皆さんはどのようにして英単語を覚えるようにしていますか？
私は、「知らない英単語はない！」と豪語しています。
豪語していると、不思議なことに、どんな英単語も簡単に覚えてしまいます。
今日は、私が出会った単語の中から、英米の知識人に一目置かれるような「知的な英単語」を選んで紹介します。
【今日の単語】
５月２３日の英単語は、「ornithology」。
（例）The lives and habits of eagles and whippoorwills, tanagers and sparrows, hawks and seagulls-all such are the province of the ornithologist .
知っていましたか？
ところで、５月２０日の「frustrate」（The continuing civil war is frustrating the efforts of relief agencies to feed thousands of famine victims.）
いかがでしたか？
frustrateの意味は、〈計画・努力などを〉だめにする、くじく、無効にする、
to prevent the plans or efforts of someone or something from being achieved、
という意味です。

イルカは名前を認識する？
A new study indicates that dolphins recognize names--their signature whistles--even when voice cues are removed from the sound.
Scientists studying bottlenose dolphins（バンドウイルカ） in Sarasota Bay, Florida, synthesized signature whistles with the caller's voice features removed and played them through an underwater speaker.
The dolphins would turn more often toward the speaker if they heard a whistle that sounded like a close relative's.
