The new laws are seen as an attempt to gag the press .

gag the press の意味か分かりません。

　「報道機関をだます」という意味でしょうか？

　「ギャグを使う」という意味なのでしょうか ?

　gagには、 joke とか funny story と言う意味がありますが、その関連なのでしょうか？

　変だと思い辞書を調べてみました。

　なんと、gagにはかん口令のような意味がありました。

to prevent somebody from speaking freely or expressing their opinion

「 bound and gagged 」で、「手足を縛られさるぐつわをされて」と言う意味まであるそうです。

　日本語になっているギャグですが、英語にはこれとはまったく異なる意味もあるものだと感心しました。
