Scientists Create Chimeric Monkeys
Scientists have created the first primate chimeras, monkeys composed of cells taken from multiple embryos.
Until now, this sort of research was primarily restricted to mice, in part because attempts to produce chimeric monkeys consistently failed.
Success was finally achieved with the use of embryonic stem cells in an earlier stage of development than those used to produce chimeric mice.
Rather than use pluripotent stem cells, which can create all cell types except for extraembryonic tissue, the researchers used totipotent cells capable of differentiating into any tissue type and of giving rise to an entire animal.
