Shay locomotives had regular fire-tube boilers(煙管ボイラー)offset to the left to provide space for, and counterbalance the weight of, a two or three cylinder "motor," mounted(設置された)vertically on the right with longitudinal(長手方向の)drive shafts extending fore and aft(前後の方向へ)from the crankshaft at wheel axle(車軸)height. These shafts had universal joints(自在継ぎ手)and square sliding prismatic joints(伸縮継ぎ手)to accommodate the swiveling(旋回する)trucks. Each axle was driven by a separate bevel gear(傘歯車), with no side rods(連結棒).
