tarpaulinタール塗り防水（帆）布防水シート（リーダーズ）「ターポーリン」とポーを強く発音します。Life of Pi の中に何度も出てくる単語で、音が面白くて、AudibleでLife of Piを聞いてみるときっと誰でも印象に残る単語です。もちろんこの本で初めてであった単語でしたし、この本は状況設定が特殊でもあったので、こんな単語には2度と出会うことはないだろうと思っていました。ところがこの本の数冊後に読んだ本の中に出てきたんですねぇ…びっくり。The Kite Runner の中です。トラックの幌にこの布が使われているのです。Amazon.comで例文を出してみました。I landed with a trampoline-like bounce on the half-unrolled tarpaulin covering a lifeboat forty feet below.（Life of Pi P.105 ）…about a dozen, including Baba and me, sitting with our suitcases between our legs, cramped with these strangers in the tarpaulin-covered cab of an old Russian truck.（The Kite Runner P.110 ）

iPod Updater
おとといから困っていた、iPodの問題がiPod Updaterをダウンロードしたら解決しました！！ああ、よかった。*******昨日は水曜日でレディースデイだったので、「４月の雪」みてきました。感想は、う～ん。。。冬ソナ以来のヨン様ですが、彼はやはり素敵だったな。何がよいかって、私は声がすきなのです。あの低い声と話し方。韓国語の響きが好きなのかなぁ。ストーリーは暗いし、ラブストーリーとして素敵という感じもしなかった。背景がいいなあと思うシーンは少ないけれど２，３あったかな。エンディングの音楽が終わって、スクリーンが真っ暗になっても誰一人動かないんだよ。こんなの初めてだった。*******The Lion's GameP.580

iPod
iTunes5.0 をダウンロードしたら（何がよくなるのか分からなかったけれど、とにかく新しいのがよいのだろうと思ったので）、iPodをつないでも認識しなくなった。あああ～～！いろいろ見てみたけれどよく分からないので、今日はもうあきらめて寝ることにします。******The Lion's GameP.473やっと真ん中をすぎたところ。非情なるテロリストもちょっと情に流されたぞ。これがもしや命取りか？という展開です。人間だもの、当然だよなぁ…（何のことか分からないと思いますが）

連休
The Lion's GameP.405まだまだです。まだ真ん中にも行っていない。テロリストとそれを追うアメリカの捜査官たちの話。******連休は子どもの学校の文化祭で、２日も行って楽しんできました。夜は「四月の雪」をレイトショーで見ようと、ウォーキングをかねて歩いていったのに、「四月の雪」はレイトショーはなくて、「シンデレラマン」はちょっとヘビーな気がしてみる気がせず、あきらめました。近いうちに見に行く予定。（ははは。。。）

前回の日記に書いたplace it について、Inaさんがコメントをつけてくださったので、ここに改めてコピーします。（コメント欄ではもったいないので）昨年のリスニング入門にでてきたそうです。It looks familiar but I can't place it. どこかで見た事があるけれど、はっきり思い出せない。place--〔通例、否定文、疑問文で〕～を(いつどこで見たかなど)正確に思い出す、～を見分ける。Thank God he couldn't place me. The Lion's Game 5日目
P.100あたり。あまり進んでいないのは、聞くだけで理解できるかなぁと挑戦してみて、戻ったりしているため。こうしてゆっくり進んでいると挫折への近道なので、明日からザーッと読むつもり。KeikoさんがPBの表を作ったので私も、真似して作ってみるつもりです。（まだできていません）伊藤サムさんの「やさしくたくさん」とか、「めざせ100万語」とか、読むことを薦める意見はいろいろありますが、私が読むことから英語学習を始めたのは、「本をよく読む人」は「国語の力がある」ということを自分が高校生のときに感じていたからです。英語も同じだろうと思ったわけです。でも、聞く、話す、書く訓練も大切ですね。やはり訓練なしでは身につかないです。（←自分に言っている）*****P.128 まで。以前、Keikoさんのところでみた place it がでてきました。he did smell a faint odor - it smelled familiar, then he placed it - almonds (P.88)mumbo jumbo もでてきました。これはビジ英で覚えたと思う。面白い音なので印象にのこりやすいですね。

７０ページまで読んで登場人物が整理できないので、もう一度メモを取りながら読み直し、７０ページまできた所。何かが起ころうとしている感じ。。。おもしろそうです。

通勤電車
今日は隣の座席に途中でアメリカ人（多分）が座った。彼は大きな荷物をひざに置いて、その上にハードカバーの" The Tin Drum"という本を開き、しばらく隣の私の本を覗き込む。あまりに覗くので、表紙を見せてあげた。会話はしなかったけれど。彼は、終わりかけていたその本を読み終わると、最後のページの隅っこに何やら書き込んでいる。図書館の本だぞー！図書館の洋書を借りると、時々名前が書き込んであったりする。The Memoir of a Geisha もそうだった。彼はその後、かばんの中から、くもんの問題プリント（国語）を出して日本語の勉強を始めた。覗き込むとかなり進んでいる。ディケンズなんて読んでおり、「喪主」という単語を調べていた。日本語を勉強するのにくもんをやるというのは、なかなかよいアイデアだなぁ、と感心。

最後80ページはノンストップでした。感動的。Once you know the truth, you can't ever go back and pick up your suitcase of lies. Heavier or not, the truth is yours now.ひとたび知ってしまうと、知らなかったときにはもう戻れない。でもどんなに重くても本当のことというのは大切だし、そこから本当に美しいものが見えてくると思う。すごくよい話だった。「確かに自分はお母さんに愛されていた」という確証がほしくてほしくて、リリィはそれを捜し求めるのだけれど、こうして読み終えてみると、リリィはあふれるほどの愛に包まれているという読後感が残る。A worker bee is just over a centimeter long and weighs only about sixty milligrams; nevertherless, she can fly with a load heavier than herself. - The Honey Bee(P.257)

おかあさんのことについて、リリィはオーガストに話したいのに、まだ口にできないでいる。ピンクハウスでは悲しいことが続いています。でも今は結婚話が舞い込み、急に華やいだ感じ。指輪を買いに行こうとしているところです。本読みながら、このピンクハウスやあたりの情景を自分で勝手にイメージしているから、映画になったらどんな感じをうけるのか、興味深い。あと８０ページ位。

The Secret Life of Bees
おかさん、おかあさん、おかあさん。とお母さんのことばかり恋しく思っている。でも、リリィは明るくて、時々笑えるくらいおかしい。お父さんは予想通り、「私の好きな色を知らない」それどころか、そんなことに取り合いもしない。寂しいのに、腹立ち紛れにお父さんに書く手紙も笑える。お父さんに電話して「私の好きな色を知っている？」と聞くリリィの心情は切ないものだけれど、話はちっとも暗くなく明るい。今、「ここにお母さんが昔いた」ということが分かったところ。 *******最近、あちこちでボキャビルが話題になり私もかなり気になるが、全然辞書を引かないで読んでいる。読みながら、こんなことでいいのか？と思う。よいはずがないだろう！！外は大雨。大雨警報です。明日の朝はやむのかなぁ。。

The Secret Life of Bees
朗読が良いです。子どもの声って本当に愛らしい。The Golden Compassも朗読がよかったのですが、これも同様。母を亡くしたリリィの養母は、ロザリーンという名の黒人女性で、今彼女が刑務所に入れられているところ。もしかして悲しい話なのかなぁ？？とちょっと心配。
