　COVID-19の感染が世界中でなかなか減少しない。欧米では感謝祭とクリスマスのホリディーシーズンに入り、贈り物の買い物やパーティー等で人々の接触が多くなる。それは日本でも同様だ。
　さて、そんなCOVID-19禍のなかで、すでに旧聞に属することだが、アメリカのオレゴン州ポートランドの人気書店「パウエルズ・シティー・オブ・ブックス」が、書店に行く機会を奪われている本好きのために、書店の匂いがする女性用男性用区別のないユニセックス香水をつくって販売を始めた。香水の名は「パウエルズ・バイ・パウエルズ」。売値は24.99ドル。25ドルにしないとこころがいかにもアメリカらしいが、日本円で約2,600円である。ただし輸送販売はアメリカ合衆国内のみ。
　スミレや樹皮の匂いと古紙の匂いを合せた香りだそうだ。新本の匂いでないところが、本好きにはたまらないかもしれない。

　それで思い出したのだが、私は両親家族と離れて中学生活をはじめたとき、丈1m20cm、幅90cmほどのガラス扉の書棚に自分の蔵書をつくりはじめていた。そして新しい本を収納すると、扉を開けた中に顔をつっこんでしばらく本の匂いをかいで楽しんでいた。楽しんでいたというより、ほとんど陶然としていたのだが、というのは、膝を抱え身をちじめて、小さな書棚にもぐりこむような格好をしていたのである。

　電子書籍の読者には書棚に身をうずめるという感覚も紙の肌触りを愛でる感覚もないだろう。もちろん「本の匂い」に対する感覚など論外だろう。もしかすると電子書籍愛好者には「本の虫」という言葉も死語なのかもしれない。
　それとも、香水「パウエルズ・バイ・パウエルズ」の香りをかぎながら電子書籍を読むならば、わずかに残っている「旧い」感覚を思い出すだろうか。

　このブログ日記の2012年3月17日を、私は「活字中毒、本の虫、愛書狂」と題して書いた。そこに『本の虫』と題されたカルル・スピッツウェグの油彩画（1850年作と推定）を掲載した。それを再び掲載する。

　ついでに付記しておこう。
　2016年にフランスの或る城が買収された。オーアンジュに在るシャトー・ド・ファロウである。買収後、2018年までの2年間に20の企業と地元の職人100人によって修復されて美しくよみがえった。
　この城は、元の城主が数々の絵画コレクションをしたことで、知る人ぞ知る城だった。その図書室の暖炉のうえに、じつは上掲の絵画『本の虫』の別ヴァージョンが飾られていた。修復後もそこに飾られているのかどうか私は知らない。作者であるカルル・スピッツウェグは、ドイツロマン主義絵画の重要画家である。

into contact with each other for gift shopping and
parties. The same is true in Japan.

By the way, in such a COVID-19 disaster, people have
been depriving of the opportunity to go to bookstore.
For the this reason, the popular bookstore "Powell's
City of Books" in Portland, Oregon, USA, which already
belong to the little prebious story though, made and
started selling unisex perfume that smell like book-
stores. The name of the perfume is " Powells by
Powells". The selling price is $ 24.99. They didn't set it
25 dollars, their heart is exactly American. It is about
2,600 yen in Japanese yen. However, shipping and sales
are only within the United States.
It seems that the scent is a combination of the scent
of violets and bark and the scent of used paper. It does
not smell like a new book, but may be irresistible for
book lovers.

That reminded me that when I started junior high
school life away from my parents and family, I started
making the collections of books for my own in a
glass-door bookshelf with a length of 1m20cm and
a width of 90cm. Then, when I put in a new book, I
squeezed my face into it while opening the door and
enjoyed smelling the book for a while. Rather than
having only fun, I was almost pleasantly drunk with
the books' smell, because I was curled holding my
knees, and as if sneaking into a small bookshelf.

I think that readers of e-books will not may have
the feeling of crouching in a bookshelf or the feel of
paper. Of course, the feeling of "book smell" is may
be out of the question. Perhaps the word "bookworm"
is may be an obsolate word for e-book enthusiasts.
However, if you read an e-book while smelling the
scent of the perfume "Powells by Powells", you migt
recall the slightly remaining "old" feeling.

loving mania". And I posted an oil painting by Carl
Spitzweg's entitled "Bookworm"(ca. 1850) was
posted there. I will post it again here.

Incidentally, let's add it.
A French castle was acquired in 2016. Château de
Falloux in Haut Anjou. After the acquisition, it was
restored and beautifully revived by 20 copanies and
100 local craftsmen in the two years to 2018.
This castle was a castle known to those in the
know because the former owner made a number
of painting collections. On the fireplace in the
library, another version of the above painting
"Bookworm" was actually displayed. I don't know
if it will be displayed there even after the resto-
ration. The painter, Carl Spitzweg, is an important
painter of German Romantic painting.
