CNNが伝えていたのは、フランスの篤志家が遺産をエルミタージュ美術館の猫達に遺贈したというのである。現在、美術館の地下には約50匹の猫が住みついているそうだ。この猫達の祖先たちは女帝エリザベータ（在位1741〜1761）の時代からエルミタージュの地下で暮し、次の女帝エカテリーナ2世が1764年に美術館として開館すると、エカテリーナ2世は猫達に美術品の保護者の地位を与えた、とCNNは書いている。以来、今日までボランティアや美術館職員が猫達の世話をし、猫専用の洗濯機や医療費は寄付によって賄われているのだそうだ。
ちょっと愉快な話だ。美術泥棒の「ねずみ小僧」もエルミタージュ美術館は三舎を避けるかしら？ ハハハ。
