On Sunday, June 8th, I visited the “Bunkyo Hydrangea Festival” at Hakusan Shrine in Hakusan, Bunkyo Ward.
The shrine grounds were packed like a crowded bathhouse. It seemed most visitors had come from Hakusan Station. Since the festival started the day before and it was the first weekend, many people likely came. There were many tents with food stalls, probably run by local residents. Although there were quite a few lines and some waiting, and the overall operation felt a bit rough, I thought the handmade, community feel was actually quite charming.
There was also a lively concert by a brass band, likely from a local school, which made the atmosphere really festive.
The shrine grounds weren’t very large, and perhaps the hydrangeas were just starting to bloom, but there was still gorgeous.
The Fujizuka(small mound) called “Hakusan Fuji,” located adjacent to the east side of Hakusan Park, is open for special viewing and climbing only during the Bunkyo Hydrangea Festival.
However, the place was extremely crowded that day, with a long line, so I decided to forgo climbing(?) to the top.
After walking around Hakusan Shrine, I strolled along the street and visited Meaka Fudoson, one of the “Edo Five Colored Fudo” temples.
When it comes to the Edo Five Colored Fudoson temples, Meguro Fudoson (Black Eye) and Mejiro Fudoson (White Eye) are the most famous and have even given their names to the surrounding areas. But the Fudo temples of Meao (Blue Eye), Mekki (Yellow Eye), and Meaka (Red Eye) also still remain. As I’ve mentioned in this blog several times , the Meao Fudoson is located in my hometown, Sangenjaya (at Kyōgakuin Temple).
Because of that background, visiting Meaka Fudoson for the first time this time was unexpectedly moving experience for me.
I’m thinking of visiting one of the “Mekki Fudoson” temples in near future.
